Which is why a 200 mile, or 150 mile, range BEV is big deal. Forget about being able to drive more between charges. Most people aren't going use those extra miles on a regular basis; though it helps in alleviating range anxiety and 'just in case' doubts. More importantly, it provides a buffer for when it is too cold or too hot out. Most of the mass market BEVs today have the range for most people's commutes, if they live in a mild climate. Outside the mild areas, we need the range to cover losses in efficiency from weather.

Will find out FCV's side of the story next winter then!

I still find the implication that FCVs have negligible range loss in cold, humorous.

Unless they defy the laws of physics, it simply takes more energy to move a vehicle through 10 degree air than 70 degree air.
Likewise, it takes more energy to drive on a snow covered road than a dry one.

That's kind of funny. Toyota claimed this super FCHV-adv got 68 mpge. Of course they gave it a much easier test than epa. We won't see the mirai really tested in cold weather, they will only be sold in southern california. They will get an epa number that will be around 65 or less for a much more aerodynamic car. Toyota only leased or gave their fuel cell vehicles to people that would write friendly reviews.

Fuel cell vehicles get worse mileage in cold conditions just like hybrids and plug-ins. Its just the degree, and from the physics of the thing it should be somewhere in between the hit of ice vehicles and plug-ins.

    65? Wouldn't it be closer to 60mpg?

Really I don't know what toyota will get in their final figure. Toyota marking was acting as if they would do much better than the clarity, so I posted a possible estimate and added or less. One thing I don't want to do is say 60 and have people jumping up and down yelling it blew away numbers if it comes in at 65. I was responding to a post about no loss of range in the cold because it got 300 mile range, but again that just defies physics and this press release.

well no it doesn't really on the same test.

Put the two press release together and range drops 131 miles in cold weather. Oops. Cars were probably not driven the same, but...

Right but it's always safer to quote a worse figure and have it come out as better than the other way around.
