Faster and rated well by car and driver, and still has a much lower take rate then the camry or fusion hybrids.

As I said in my post I hope there is a virtuous circle where everyone in the game will bring down costs and improve the systems.

I really doubt that many will get over 44 in the real world, especially when these cars sell to the non-hyper milers. What the accord got less than a mile per gallon more than the fusion hybrid on fueleconomy.gov and those are self sellectors.
    Compare Side-by-Side

Remember the guy most against the volt is a chevy dealer and congressman Mike Kelly. I doubt the anti hybrid chevy dealers that hate the volt are going to start praising this thing, especially if chevy customers start complaining that they can't get the promised mileage. I think time will tell though.

Fuelly currently has the Accord hybrid split in two groups; a electric/gas L4 and 2L electric/gas L4 1993cc. One is around 43mpg and the other at 45. The averages are one summer to two winters at this point, and the first one to appear on the site was in Northern Canada.

It seems to be a decent hybrid, but Honda doesn't offer it is a less expensive trim.

I think Honda made a mistake when they rolled out Accord PHEV and HEV together.

+1. This car will save much more gasoline without using electricity or $7,500 tax incentive. You get a roomy family car that is practical.

This is what John and I have been pushing GM to do.

The PHEV was purely for CARB compliance. It was only released in New York and California, and those are still the only states in which you can buy it, a quick search shows.
How much it saves all depends on how many buy it. The current Volt managed about 20,000 sold a year. The Camry and Fusion hybrids both sell in 24,000 to 30,000 a year range. Assuming the Malibu hybrid sells in the same range, the extra ones sold over the Volt will probably have both models saving about the same amount of gasoline.

Happened to be at the dealer the other day and wandered the lot looking to see what replacing my wife's '11 Avalon with the '15 Avalon Hybrid would cost.

The answer was a staggering $47k+ (sticker plus distributor add ons).

I think new tires are cheaper.

Good short video of the new Malibu hybrid showing the interior up close with rear leg room and trunk etc.

You were one of the few, and most of them, like you, bought something else.;)
The old one's styling wasn't the problem. It was the size. Tight rear room is fine for luxury midsize sedans, not for the brad and butter models that are bought by families.

They goofed up the current Malibu by shortening the wheelbase from the previous version, making it a more cramped car than before.
It's good to see that they rethought that.

The Impala is a full size; a competitor to the Avalon. The redesign of it has done quite well last year.
The current Malibu's rear seat has about as much space as the Cruze. With the Cruze having as much cabin space as a Prius, those looking at the Malibu, and not needing the space in the rear, likely opted to pay less, or get more features, with the Cruze.

The Camry and Accord sold in the 400k range last year. The Fusion and Altima in the 300k one. The Sonata sold over 200k. The Malibu got 188k. Sixth isn't too shabby with 30k over the seventh, the Optima. The Cruze sold 270k though. Few makers had their 'compact' outsell their midsize sedan. If others did, it was real close.
