It's inside the front bumper on the passenger side. Ifound and looked through the service manuals last night but couldn't find it. I'm hoping it's an extension of the washer fluid reservoir (not critical) but the manual just showed the one in the engine bay.

The thread you were supposed to resurrect for stuff like this is Stump the Chump!

If no one else has gone there yet, I'll guess air intake resonator. The duct tape kinda threw me though. I don't think that was stock.

I did something similar on my Acura Integra when I was younger. Saw a DIY for a cold air intake. All you needed was tubing to route the intake to under the the right headlight. I used copious amount of duct tape to hold it together.

Ok, I did some more digging via the wheel well and I'm pretty sure it's connected to the air intake. If I reach in I can feel a tube that goes through the metal fender into the front of the engine bay right where the black plastic of the intake is. I have a hard time believing though that this was some kind of "ricer" mod done by the previous owner. I have the impression that the previous owner was an average adult female. But that's a total guess. When I get a chance to sit down and look through the service manual docs, I'll look for the intake components and see whether this is legit or not.

Not to worry, your Helmholtz resonator came with the car. The duct tape is the only part that's not stock. I might guess a past front-corner collision that banged up the resonator, and somebody duct-taped it to save the $48 for a new one?

Curiously, it's called out in the 2004 New Car Features Manual as if it were a change, but my 2001's had one all along. I guess they just forgot to mention it in the Gen 1 manuals.

Based on its location it is probably the resonator for the ICE air intake. Google part # 1789321030 and you should see a drawing of it.

Yup, that's what it looks like.

I agree on the duct tape being a quick repair from a front corner hit. Not gonna worry about it. Thanks all!
