I just bought a used 2010 Toyota Prius. I have since heard that there was a recall on this year due to a problem with the computer interfering with the brakes or something, and a number of people were killed by it.

What would be the quickest way to determine if my car was affected by this and if some kind of required software update has already been applied to it?

I put my VIN number in Toyota's online "look up safety recalls page and it returned this message:

It said: "There are no open Safety Recalls or Service Campaigns for this vehicle."

Does this mean I have nothing to worry about? Or does it simply mean that this recall was so long ago that it is no longer considered "open" even if my specific car was not updated...

either all the recalls were done or there was no recall in the first place. You can see the service history while you're there.

But in terms of recalls, your car has none pending...........

on a side note, I don't think anyone died from the 2010 brakes????

The computer didn't interfere with the brakes. The brake ECU was reprogrammed because some drivers didn't like how the brakes felt. If the car was bought from a Toyota dealer they would/should have performed all the recall work before selling it. Since their database shows the car doesn't have any outstanding recalls relax & enjoy the ride.

Any fatalities are news to me. I don't recall any being mentioned, either here in PriusChat or in the mass media news reports, when my 2010 had its brake recall done.

There were fatalities associated with the Toyota-wide Sudden Unintended Acceleration outbreak (both debacle and hysteria). But that was a separate issue, I don't remember any SUA fatalities in Prii, and my 2010 had no recall for that. The biggest block of fatalities was in the Camry line, but other models had them too.

If your VIN shows no open recalls, that should mean any recalls have already been applied. You should also be able to dig down and find the date (and maybe even location) any recalls were applied to your specific vehicle,
