During the weekend, some bubblehead  was working on my Prius and cracked the plastic relay case cover.

I bought some Permatex RTV high temp black gasket stuff and was going to run a bead along the crack, which I think should be fine, but as I just about got ready to do it, thought, hmmm, there might be some obtuse reason why I should not?

This is just a short fissure on the top, solid all around it and I don't think the "integrity" of the cover is impaired, other than the small crack.

    Anyone?

. Put the cover back with the crack, you'll be fine and nobody will see it.

Don't know why you should not do it.

But, do know why you should probably do something. Electricity and water do not mix. And while I doubt there is a great chance of water getting in, why take the chance that it would. Esp. for 20 cents worth of make-a-gasket.

I think I have read a few instances of water getting into the sparkplug/coil set-up (might not have been on Prius) and creating some hassles. And, no, this is not your problem, but again, it is water and electrics....

Which cover did said bubblehead happen to crack? 82662A or 82662B?

Ok ... I guess they are a bit more than a tube of Permatex black ....

Or you could just schmutz a soldering iron tip down along the crack and call it good....

Tube of Permatex Black $3.44. New Toyota Part: Priceless.

Yes, I was worried about electronics.

I just did it. It looks pretty good. I did get three mosquito bites while doing it, but held steady anyway. Now, I just know that someone will pop up and tell why I should not have done it.

Don't have a soldering iron. Never learned that trade.

If you haven't learned the 'official' use of a soldering iron, you can still use it to melt random things and make them blobby, and that can be fun.

$3.44 is cheaper than $36.67, but for me to decide whether that was priceless or not, I'd have to know more about Iowa mosquitoes.

Did the "bubblehead" offer to replace the cover?

Hmm, it seemed the bubblehead was let off easy for some obscure reason.

I am a generous and friendly soul. One of the happy Prius owners. So, said bubblehead had no liability -- other than $3.44. o_O

Hey, that is exactly who did the work! Lots of submarine crews here in Iowa.

Yeah....but most of the ones in IA are nukes.
Great operators....but they're rather process oriented.
Not what you would call outside the box thinkers.

Sincere apologies for my earlier objection. :D

I once noticed a whistling noise from a car, parked after a long drive on hot day. Next time I was in for a service (I wasn't DIY'ing at the time) I asked the service writer if that was normal. I was pretty sure, just the gas cap venting due to some pressure limit, but just thought I'd ask.

Anyway, a few days later, started noticing a gas smell around the car. Yup: they'd drilled a hole through the cap, to remedy the whistle. I bought a new cap, maybe $30.
