If Malibu hybrid gets 1/3 of the tax incentive ($2,500), it'll fly off the dealership. 3 MH will save more gas than 1 Volt.

    It'll also save electricity also.

i guess i'm trying to figure out what they consider to be the competition. it really is a unique vehicle.

The Malibu doesn't have a plug. Thus, no incentive.
The CT6 will be a plugin, and be more attractive to those buyers for that reason.
I was too. perhaps they see the competition as just themselves.

Which is a drop of $9-10k in 2015 dollars (adjusting for inflation).

The Volt, like the i3 with the range extender option, is primarily competing with BEVs.

It is mostly a transitional commuter and small family vehicle until long-range superchargable BEVs drop into the same price level.

In 2-4 years we will have 200-mile range BEVs that are within $5-8k in price and that will take away some fraction of the "BEV-like" customer base. At the same time, the overall size of that sales pie should be growing quickly as various trends reduce the sales of conventional cars.

A Volt-like vehicle class will likely continue to make sense for many customers for at least another 10-15 years.

The best way to save gas is by not replacing it with another form of energy.

You don't need a plug to save gas.

Back in 2007, the goal of "nicely under $30,000" was stated. That was without dependency on any tax-credit.

The reason for that was simple. It required that price to compete with the true competition, traditional vehicles.

I have never used that phrase myself but I suppose you could say that the Volt is a major jump forward beyond conventional cars. It is also a further substantial step beyond today's Prius towards a future world of non-fossil electrified vehicles.

Adjusted today to 2007 constant (inflation-adjusted) dollars, the 2016 Volt would have had an MSRP of $29,280 before tax credits and rebates in 2007. If you include the mandatory "destination fee" it would have been about $30,030.

Of course, in major markets, the 2015 Volt is available with discounts for considerably less than that today in 2007 dollars and the same will be true for the new 2016 model within a year or two.

    Mission accomplished?

Adjusted. No. There was never any disclaimer of that nature. Price was always with respect to the future market... hence being a goal.

It certainly isn't competitive with traditional vehicles at today's prices. If it was, no subsidies would be needed.

So you charge up your Volt using only solar - good for you.

You can charge up your Prius with solar too.

Just put up a solar panel that would replace fossil fuel electricity. It'll cancel out the fossil gasoline usage in your Prius.

I was suggesting only in term of energy. Not of emission or reliability because they are different from fossil vs. solar.

Didn't the Prius go through that same transition?

The federal tax credit is for 200k cars.
