90/100K Maintenance help!

    Hi everyone, I'm new on here and have owned my 2010 Prius for only 6 months now. Would love some guidance on this breakdown from the dealership. I'm about to do a 4000 mile drive across country with my wife (moving out to LA from GA) and would like to make sure the car is in tip top shape for it.

    *Filters: I can replace these myself, they're pretty easy to get to.
    *Tires: my 2 front ones are worn out on the outside edges and need to be replaced & they suggested an alignment due to the wear on the edges.
    *Coolant Flushes: I can be on board with this being taken care of since it seems unanimous from the forums I've been reading.
    *Bulbs: Don't know how easy it is to replace these. The front passenger one is a B to get to and was told the techs actually take off the fender to get to it correctly.

    Just a few thoughts:

    1. Yes, definitely deal with filter replacement yourself. First off: do they NEED replacement? Pull them, check condition. I'd be more picky with the engine filter. With the cabin filter, I'm inclined to just tap the occasional bug off, and reverse-blow some air through it.

    2. Fuel Induction services: if you've no issues, skip it, a waste of money.

    3. Inverter Coolant change interval is 150,000 miles, or 15 years, in the States, I think. In the maintenance booklet: page 50, the 100,000 mile service ref's footnote #3, which is on page 51. FWIW, the two coolant circuits have the same interval in Canada: 160,000 km (roughly 100,000 miles) or 10 years. So I do not know.

    4. For the worn tires, I'd be inclined to replace all four at once. Also, the rear wheels have moderate camber (splay out at the bottom, for stability in turns). This is pretty common, and very likely the cause of your tires being more worn towards the inside. I've never seen a set of worn tires that aren't more worn on the inside. I'd skip the alignment, unless you're sure something's off, like you've hit a curb hard, something like that.

    At only 90,000 miles, you should be fine on your trip. I would defer all those services until you get to your destination. You can change filters, they are super easy but don't do the coolant changes until you have reached your final destination. You don't want a perfectly running car to have issues.

    You do want to make sure the tires are up for the trip. If your headlight is out, you should get that fixed before your trip too. But those 2 are the only things of concern.

    That's gold. There's a lot of reports of cars having problems right after coolant changes, due to trapped air. Best to do that when you're close to home.

    Headlight lowbeam and highbeam builbs should be easy to replace yourself (unless you have LED headlamps like me). Simply twist to remove the socket from the headlamp. It is especially easy if you have small hands. There should be a video somewhere.

    However, I usually wouldn't replace the bulbs unless they are burnt out. Then again, I saw a few threads complaining how Prius headlight bulbs burn out rather quickly.

    • Mechanic confirmed the alignment was off, enough to justify the $80. I'm certainly ok with that since the long-haul drive is coming up next week.
    • Buying the 2 tires in front. Back ones were hardly worn out and almost new (his reply to my question about 4 tires instead of 2)
    • Nixing the 90K & 100K for now, until we get out to CA. (oil change was done about 3000 miles ago and will last the full trip; I will check on the air filters when I pick up the car and see for myself. $40 to replace if I need to; THANK YOU for the info on the fuel services - I'll keep an eye on the MPG during the trip and if it's lower than 45+, I'll look into those services later on)
    • I'm having them replace the bulbs out of convenience but I have to say, the front passenger headlight is pure hell to try yourself. With the warranty behind it, it'll be a peace of mind knowing it's covered if they go out in 2 months.
    The new total came to $385!!!!
    Guys, you just saved me about $550 from me jumping on here and asking for help. Can't thank you enough!

    Here's to save you some more money.

    1.) you should change out your front tires if they're below 2/32" on the tread mark, if the sides are warned down balled, then I would recommend replacing the front tires in pairs. You can replace tires in pairs or all 4, but don't replace just 1.
    2.) I would do an alignment every 2-4 years depending on your driving condition, if you drive 55k in a year, I would do it every 2 years. But if your driving condition is only 55k every 2 years, I would do it every 4 years.
    3.) You don't need fuel induction system cleaning since that's a waste of money, just do a throttle body cleaning, which removes carb build up in your throttle plate. Here's a link:

    4.) headlight bulbs are pretty easy, just make room and have someone with a small hand to remove and install them for you. Use DW-40 if its tough to twist the bulb out of the headlight assembly.

    5.) Coolant can wait as other's have suggested, its a pretty simple process from the looks of it. Just a simple drain and refill and then set the vehicle into maintenance mode. I haven't done it yet, but will do later on as my vehicle is reaching 90k miles.
    6.) Engine and cabin air filter is simple.

    7.) Oil change is simple too.


    If you do this all yourself, you can save half of what you are paying now, so probably cost 400-500$ in parts alone. You can't change the tires and alignment yourself, so can't deduct that lol.

    It is a used car right? Do "all fluids and filters"...including transmission "drain and fill" and brake system flush. Do the bulbs and "what you can" yourself. When you have the two tires replaced and alignment done (not at the Dealership), have them "all" balanced.

    The "Fuel Induction, Fuel Injection And Mass Air Services for $298.76" at 90K is a Dealer scam...so don't do this.
