Okay, so you save 2k over 200k miles, so 20 years, which I personally think is still overly optimistic. That's $8/month. Given the people buying this car… just cut 2 lattes and you have the same savings. Also, how much more are you paying for this savings?
I bought a pip in part because it was cheaper than a Prius. But if it costs more, I don't think the math works out.

Sure thing, if someone only does highway driving, never charges the car, and gas stays at $2.50/gallon for the next decade. Someone who did half highway via HEV and half city via EV would spend ~$5k less. Granted, that's still only $20/month...

But it's something, which I think is the point. Besides, I'd like to think pip drivers had already cut out the lattes. ;)

Keep in mind, for those that do plug the car in, the grid energy improves the over fuel efficiency even for those doing mostly highway miles. Plug in conversions saw a fuel economy improvement, and some of those didn't have an EV mode.

kidding aside, you really didn't think GM would allow the Gen II Volt come out, w/out lots & lots of sticker availability, did you?

If one were cynical, one would believe that GM (and Toyota) would push for the additional green CA HOV decals to get a big bump of sales for their PHEV, and it wouldn't bother them in the least if that later resulted in congestion that got ALL of the HOV decals cancelled; they would have their sale.

California should just scrap all the current HOV stickers, and just flat out sell them. First come, first served with varying prices for technology and efficiency; lowest for a frugal BEV like the Leaf, and highest for a full size FSP SUV.

The initial ones added around $4000 to a used Prius. Start the price there.

In OC - if gas were $2.50/gallon, we wouldn't be the capitol of phev's.

I just was contacted for a survey from UC Davis about why I bought my PIP. When they publish the results we should know.... I had a 2012 Prius and traded it in for a 2014 PIP just to get a green sticker before the program ended. I save 2-3 hours a week because of the sticker, that is like 6 entire days every year....

You can check the most recent survey report now. It's an ongoing survey and is updated regularly.

HOV stickers are more important to buyers of PiPs than any other plug-in. Makes sense.

or, it might just be that more people would start jumping illegally into the HOV lanes.

with our legislators whining about how plugin's aren't paying their fair share of road taxes ( because they're not using enough gas which gets taxed) - skip the SUV HOV sticker idea, & just stick it to the plugins - then rationalize the extra sticker money to count towards the road tax.

With their general budget problems, why not just have an annual auction for the stickers. Even if it is FSPs that win the majority, emissions from traffic will still go down with them idling less in congestion.

Just what we need, more disparity between the rich and everyone else.

    No thanks.

The Diamond Lane congestion on my way home is just as hideous as the mess in the rest of the traffic lanes. Very little benefit here.
