06 Prius P0A80 at 110k miles - Any hope of after-warranty assistance?

Up until about 2 years ago, Toyota repeatedly said the HV battery was lasting much longer than 100k miles (you can find all sorts of "quotes" of Toyota spokespeople online).

My 06 Prius' battery has died at 110k miles, and I see a lot of other people with similar problems. I've called 4 local dealerships and they all estimate $3500 to $4000, which sounds really high. I was expecting $2800-3000. The car was purchased in Texas but is now registered in Oregon.

Since the warranty on 06 is 8/100, it's not THAT far past the end of the warranty (about 10%). Is Toyota granting after-warranty assistance in cases like this? I'm not expecting full coverage, but some relief would be nice given their wildly optimistic marketing hype when I bought the car.

    Secondary questions -
    • The car has been very well maintained and is otherwise in good shape. Is it worth replacing the battery?
    • How long is the warranty on a Toyota replacement battery?
    • A local shop will install a Dorman for $2500 -- Is that reasonable?
    • Any difference between Dorman and Greentec?
    Thanks

for $2,500. i would go for a new one. although the warranty will only be one year, you can reasonably expect another 100,000+ miles out of it. and don't make a decision until you've heard from toyota. shop around some more, what state are you in? the doorman should buy you a few years, but your car is barely broken in! all the best.(y)

Since your car is registered in Oregon, a CARB state, you might want to try and get the CARB extended warranty to apply to your car. Just bring it to your local Oregon Toyota dealer and have them diagnose the car. There have been a few examples (strangely) recently of cars bought in non CARB states, but registered in CARB states......that were still covered under 10yr/150k miles warranty.

If they tell you it's not under warranty anymore, then you can request that they call Toyota for a goodwill assistance. Yes I believe Toyota, if asked, will help cover a portion of your repair.

I was able to get the Dorman battery at a local parts store for $1332 and installation at a repair shop for the book time of 3.25 hours, so it'll come out under $1700. About half of the dealer charge and $1000 less than most shops that sell the battery and installation together. Seems replacing Prius batteries is a good business if you can find uneducated consumers (of which there seem to be a lot).

3 years is their standard warranty.

Or, the shop that sells a battery and installation bundle recognizes it will probably have to replace the Dorman battery under warranty once or twice, so the $1K extra price covers their labor effort if/when the battery fails under warranty.
