Difference in EV mileage between Base and Advanced?

    Talked to service today and their records say that the brake service (change and flush) was recommended twice to the previous owner but never done until the dealership took the car in for trade. It was performed as part of making the car a Toyota certified used car. Now that makes a lot more sense.

    I explained what I've done so far and the service advisor is going to ask some other people there about it and get back to me.

    Has the 12 volt been tested? It is charged from the traction battery. So if it is going bad, it could be drawing more juice from the traction battery in an effort to keep it fully charged. Likewise, a vampire load from an accessory could do the same. Perhaps something not obvious has been left on, or a aftermarket accessory installed by the previous owner.

    I know that there's a way to get into the diagnostic menu on the 2nd gen Prius to check the 12 volt battery and the charging system. Is there a way to do that on the 3rd gen Prius?

    Found out the way to check the 12v battery and it's fine.
    12.6v everything off
    12.3v with lights on
    14.1v with Prius turned on

    that would also affect your mpg's but you haven't really done a comparison yet, have you? i'm thinking ev miles would be affected more by friction problems than mpg's.

    I haven't got the time to try to do an accurate mpg comparison. It's far easier and less time consuming to do a fairly accurate EV miles comparison. However, using a small uncontrolled sample it appears that the 2 cars are very close to the same mpg when not in EV. Both are easily over 50mpg and within a mile or so of each other. Certainly nothing like the 17% difference in EV miles.

    The one Prius delivering fewer EV miles is utilizing the same amount of electricity, which likely means the same is true for gas consumption. In that case, the EV/HV ratio really doesn't mean much.

    It's the overall efficiency that counts with a plug-in hybrid and that fact hasn't been taken into consideration yet. We still don't know what the resulting MPG is. Blending isn't count as EV, even though it takes advantage of plug-supplied electricity.

    You must look at both KWH and GALLONS to truly understand differences.

    there have been so many ev distance complaints here, over the years. but always from different drivers, cars, topography, weather and etc. this is really the first time we have had a chance to see two cars compared under the same conditions. i would love to see toyota get involved.

    i wonder how two new cars, right out of the box would compare.

    I had a twin pipe motorcycle at one time: one pipe was sooty looking, the other looked much greyer, leaner. Drove me nuts.

    As soon as you've two test subjects, you start seeing the differences, and it can snowball.

    As much as Greg tries, he'll ultimately come up short on detail. There's simply too much to measure all at once. Even the most basic thing, like cleaning the venting for matching cooling presents challenges. Also, how would we know if there's a cell with reduced capacity?

    We don't have any type of operational tolerance information available. Heck, we don't even know how much traditional vehicles are allowed to vary. It's always been a huge mystery.

    This drive I captured took quite a bit of effort to learn out to deliver, and even then I've simply been too busy to create new ones. Though, now living at the new house, I'm looking forward to the showing how the new driving route compares...

    agreed, i think a cell with reduced capacity is the fear, and if all else fails, a tech stream scan may be inevitable.

    Was that checked after the car sat for awhile, or right after shutting it off? The concern I'm thinking of is how quickly the battery is discharging. The 14V is normal for a 12V car accessory system when it is on. That's the charge coming off inverter or alternator. It doesn't tell you how much electricity is going to the battery for charging. It could produce up to 15V after a start for an ICE car, but starting them sucks more out of a battery than it does for hybrids and plugins.

    Does the PPI charge the 12V while plugged in? or unplugged? That second question varies among BEVs; it doesn't on a Leaf and does on a Tesla S.

    I think his charging test ruled out the possibility of a cell with reduced capacity. Both batteries came out in the same good shape.

    pip charges the 12v while plugged in and charging, and also like the lift back for people who don't plug in. 12. 6 is okay if the surface charge is gone.

    I emailed our local service manager re Toyota UK's Hybrid Health Check:

    He replied that it's not available here (Canada) but he was going to forward the link to his Toyo Canada reps.

    Maybe something like that would help assess the two hybrids health, compare? Or maybe it's the latest wallet flush, not sure.
