Just put a 5W-40 Mobil 1 TDT oil in...

    For my last oil change at ~ 165000 miles I decided to try something new (have been using M1 5W-30 previously all the time) to quiet down the rickety-clackety valves. In the Wallyworld I saw 4-quart 5W-40 Turbo Diesel Truck oil that also has gasoline SM, SL, SN rating.... for $26 and decided to try it.

    So far the engine is noticeably quieter, and I notice no significant effects on gas mileage. The engine response to a pressed gas pedal seem better too, but that's definitely within the error margin of my butt-o-meter :)

    I plan to have it in for 5000 to 8000 miles. Will report if engine dies suddenly :)

    P.S. I never had oil consumption between changes... for a car that burns oil, using something like this Mobil1 TDT would not be a best choice as this oil has lots of additives - if burned may affect catalytic converter

    I have a lot of very short trips in bad Atlanta traffic + AC use... so I usually get ~43 mpg. That looks pretty much unchanged. Yesterday on a longer interstate tun at ~ 65 mph I got 54 mpg. Good enough for me :)

    Very unlikely to cause any problems in my opinion. :)

    BTW. What brand oil was it? It sounds like it might be "Rotella T6" or similar.

    I think, off-and-on, about trying a higher viscosity oil, say 5W-20, putting it in the spring, see how it does, change it out for 0W-20 (spec'd oil for third gen), in the fall.

    I see TDT stands for Turbo Diesel Truck. I'd pass on that, but for an older, highish mileage vehicle, might be worth a try.

    5W-20 will be only different from 0W-20 at VERY cold temperatures

    The viscosity is higher, that's why your engine is quieter. Additives like Phosphorus and Zinc are much higher too, which gives better metal-to-metal protection but not good for the CAT... if the engine currently burns oil.
