After learning a Prius liftback does not take a 4 x 4 ft. sheet of plywood, I got a GMC Sierra rental from Uhaul. It was very new, only 2k miles on ODO.

Welp, either the driver's window switch was defective or it needed the Midas touch: It was an auto up/down window setup. One tap and that window would start going all the way down (or up). Then supposed to tap it again to stop it where ya want, right? I did that time and again. Instead of window stoppping, it would go the opposite direction. This happened over and over and over. I could not open the window part way. It was either all the way up or all the way down. A couple times I got lucky and was able to stop the window part way, but only a couple times out of .... 40, playing with it.

I got to thinking, would GM say, there's nothing wrong with it, that's the way they work? Didn't leave me with a good impression of GM.

The dashboard design was pretty darn dated also. Hmmm, what's up GM?

Driving Honda over the years, I'd occasionally be renting a panel van or cube truck; the rentals were typically GM. To be fair: maybe trucks in general follow a different mindset, but it sure felt like a paradigm shift, into the crude zone.

If you need to haul 4x8 sheets of plywood or other construction materials, a truck is needed. No ifs and or buts about it.

absolutely, i was referring to people who buy them just to sit high and say 'look at me'.

interesting thought tho, what does someone who needs a pickup, look for?

I submit you just didn't have the touch for the other manufacturer's controls and it happens both ways. Going from GM to Toyota, Prius controls are awkward and in the wrong location at first but we get accustomed.

I don't look forward to driving Mom's Malibu. I don't have the rhythm down for the double button press to unlock all the doors. I looked all over the car for the button to pop the door for the gas tank. There isn't one. You just push in on the door and it pops open. BTW, that door's on the wrong side of the car. Is there really anything wrong with the car? No. I'm just not used to it. This is why when I needed a rental it had to be a Prius.

Mentioned somewhere else, but 3 doors down the man has a full size Titan 4x4 pickup. Now I know he doesn't work in construction as he goes to work in dressy clothes. I haven't paid all that close of attention, but I haven't seen him doing house projects either.

some people just like pick up trucks, not sure why. i can admire an antique pick up, and i have an '05 dakota with 28,000 miles for my former remodeling business and the dump, but i get no thrill out of driving it, and it irks me to fill the tank at 17 mpg.

i only put 700 miles on her last year, and at $1,000. per year for insurance and registration, i'm seriously considering a small trailer for yard refuse which is about all i use it for now. i loan it out more than i use it myself.

Going to the Sonic from the HHR, I had to get used to the window controls being back on the door instead of the center stack. I wasn't adjusting to the Sonic having the power door locks on that center stack, and then I learned locking the drivers door locks all the doors. The comfort blinkers did take a little practice to learn how much pressure it took to operate.

I once had to help a lady gas up a rental VW. We had to read the manual in order to figure out how to open the gas flap. You had to put the key in the driver's door lock, and turn it the opposite way of locking/unlocking.

As JimN said, you just weren't use to the controls. The GM auto down/up window switches I have used all took a hard push to turn on, and then a light push to stop the window at a desired height. Or just the light push to manually control the window.

Also, rental trucks and vans tend to be bare bones and cheap plastic interiors. They are the base Work trims. A few years ago, your truck would have had window cranks.

A few years back, a coworker and I were talking in the hallway. He asked the one question everyone thinks is the stumper: "What do you do if you have to haul something?"

It just so happened that another coworker - a true Good ol' Boy - was walking towards us. "Hey Clay," yes his name is Clay, "I have some stuff I need to haul from the Home Dept to my house. Can I borrow your truck?"

Clay replied, "it better come back with a full tank and six pack."

I just looked at my coworker and said, "that."
