i have a 2006 with almost 200k miles. Got the red triangle, check engine light, and the red car at the top of the MFD. I ran the codes and got P3000. Does this sound like traction battery failure? The car still turns on and ICE still cycles off and on.

I am in Ohio, any suggestions on rebuilders around here that will install a replacement for me, assuming it is the battery.

What are you using to retrieve the DTC?

DTC P3000 is logged by the hybrid vehicle ECU and means the traction battery ECU or the traction battery has a problem. I would expect the traction battery ECU to log additional DTC which would show where the problem is.

One option is take it to Toyota dealer for diagnosis, and then if it is the HV batt, see what they offer (usually $3500 or so). But you can then call Toyota and ask for out of warranty assistance, and sometimes get it down to around $2000 in cases a little like yours.

Also re: your current problem, sometime batt cooling fan is clogged and unclogging may help.

I got the code from a OBDII code reader, that also has special manufacture specific codes. Initially it said no codes were recorded, but when I looked up mfr specific, it displayed P3000.

Mini VCI would be a better choice to read the DTC.

OK, thanks. BTW, I also have the amber circle with exclamation point, and the TCS red warning light as well.

with 200k, it's likely the battery, but better to do more detailed investigation before going to all that trouble and expense.

Do you have an independent mechanic that you work with?
I'd be happy to help get them up to speed if they are willing.

Nope, I'm the only mechanic that has touched this car. However, this is my first "hybrid" system problem that I've encountered.

Sorry I don't know any hybrid specific guys in your area.
But feel free to give me a call if you have other questions or if you plan to tackle this yourself.

Update: I'm 99% sure it is the hybrid battery. Drove around the block yesterday and the charge meter for the battery was jumping all over the place. I verified the blower is operating, and the coolant pump for the inverter is running. I also checked the voltage on the 12V, and it is 12.4V, and it is 3 years old (Toyota OEM).

I ended up calling High Voltage Solutionz, they quoted me a price of $1000 for a 12 month warranty rebuilt replacement. They will show up at my house, run diagnostics on the car first. If it is not the battery, they will tell me the problem and be on their way with no charge to me. If they verify it is the battery, they will replace on the spot in my driveway, takes 30 minutes. Best part is, I don't pay them a dime until the work is done to my satisfaction, and we verify everything is working properly. Then I give the tech a check for the purchase price. The warranty is unlimited miles, and if there is a problem during that time, they will send a tech out to my house and repair or replace at no cost to me.

Sounded like a great deal, with relatively low risk. They said they will turn this all around in the next 5 to 7 days. I will post back here with the results.

Just wanted you to know there is post on PriusChat that warns about High Voltage Solutionz
Gen II Prius Battery Solution? (140,000)
    From that post:
"We have also had a battery replaced by High Voltage Solutionz (located in FL), and it went bad within the warranty period, but they will not honor the warranty. We had to purchase a battery elsewhere, and have lost the money paid to High Voltage Solutionz. I would NOT recommend them. Have filed complaints with Attorney General and BBB."

I was thinking about this thread -- thanks for digging it up.

Did HVS move to the OH area ? Even if I assume the disgruntled customer thread is an outlier, I'm having trouble understanding how a FL company is going to offer free warranty service so far away.
