This is a Honda CR-X. I'm not sure of the exact year of the car in the photo, but the model ran from 1983 to 1991.
Honda continued the split rear window with both versions of the Insight and CR-Z. It has even appeared on other makes' models, like the Pontiac Aztek.

The first Prius came out in 1997, and was a basic compact sedan, with a traditional trunk.

"...justify the extra costs of lithium-ion."
The gap between NiMH and Li-ion per kWh has shrank a lot. Depending on the source, they are even the same.
I think it has more to do with Toyota Europe charging too much for the Prius, and the wide selection of small diesels there.

Maybe they'll pipe in fake engine sounds like the mustang to feel sportier. That's what I'm hoping.

    2015 Tokyo Motor Show from 29 October - 8 November 2015

Because that was the last time a news article was written based information released by Toyota. These listed car mags have to give the public something to read, but it sure does not come from a source inside Toyota.
PriusChat members do not need speculations or analyses from these Mags, we are over 5000 posts and counting just in this thread alone.

    1992 Toyota Carina Liftback

The Gen 1 Prius was a sedan and ran from 1997 (Dec) to 2003. (Even though the history of the Prius revealed that the original design was a liftback design that looked like a sedan but the big boss wanted a traditional sedan with a traditional trunklid.
The Gen 2 was the first application of a liftback and was meant to appeal to Europeans who prefer a hatchback design. Turns out some Americans liked it too as the original sales target of 36,000 for the 2004 MY was surpassed (43k I think was the actual sales number)

Which Autoshow do you think will present the new Gen IV Prius? (Now with poll!) | PriusChat

There are 3 more major car shows for this year - Frankfurt, Tokyo and L.A..

If anyone's wondering, the Honda Civic Hatchback has had the split window (like the Prius and CR-Z/CR-X) for a while.

Here's a preview of the latest Civic Hatchback to be launched later this year.

Is it really? Not bad, guess it would have to grow on me a little.

It's like Toyota chose (based off the nasty sneak photos) to make the gen 4 look like a last gen civic

    And

It appears (bases on above photo) that Honda is trying to mimic a gen 3 Liftback. Lol.

On that note, here is something coming for those who are constantly asking for "SPORT" Honda's car-less CEO holding out for dream wheels -- the Civic Type R

Yes. This is the 2006 Civic Type S hatchback, the first year they went to the split-window design

Note the triangular foglights and the rocketship-shaped door handles. It was cool. The "H" badge in the front is actually hidden behind the plexiglass.

And the cool factor continues in the interior

It has the same split-level dashboard we got in our redesigned 2006 Civic sedan but it looks much more driver-oriented in the hatchback.

Remember, this design is 9 years old!

I've always found Honda engines to be super reliable and smooth. The build quality is top notch inside out and the Civic in particular, is class-leading in terms of handling. Its a pity that Honda has not been able to make worthwhile progress on Hybrid Technology.

The big honchos at Honda are clueless. They don't understand people rejected the Insight and the Civic Hybrid because of how bad the IMA was. Now they have a promising new hybrid drivetrain, they pull out the Insight and won't put it in the Civic based on those historical bad sales.

If you are referring to what I think you are, the mustang isn't piping in fake engine sounds. It's a resonance tube that makes the engine sound better from inside the cabin. Sports car drivers are 'slightly' different priorities than the rest of us. They may not want wind noise drowning out the radio, but they do want to hear the motor running.
And a UK car reviewer likely sees more of those than Prii.
I think more Honda burned their alt fuel rep on the Civic hybrid battery issue. They seem to be planning to rebuild it with just the Accord hybrid and possible plug in. Plus low gas prices aren't going to have many people looking for a hybrid, and will make more sporty trims and models more profitable. Remember, Honda is really only a 'big' car company in the US. Once their rep has improved, and/or the public has forgotten the old Civic hybrid, their new hybrids may return in time for higher gas prices.
The CNG Civic had been available for years; longer than the hybrid. CNG for personal cars never caught on during that time. They'll have the new Clarity, and rumored plugin for California requirements and incentives.

Perhaps if he had been personally burned by a Honda hybrid, he might have.

Historically, Honda's were designed with fuel efficiency in mind. And not just cars, but also lawnmowers, power equipment, motorcycles, ATVs, power generators; portable up to continuous ones for apartment buildings, and now private jets. So I sympathized with them when Toyota was getting all this green cred for the Prius while also selling V8 FSP trucks and SUVs.
