This technology absolutely promotes conservation. A whole new cross section of people are all of a sudden looking at electric cars.

The "gear heads" are dying off. The days of modifying a car with boring out the cylinders is not the same. People like the car to look fast, but it doesn't have to be. It used to be having a sleeper car that looked stock but could whoop anyone was the pride. Now you just drive it down to the car show and he who has the shiniest chrome wheels wins. Most gas cars cannot be modified in the same ways anymore either. You start messing with it, it throws an error code, and the car doesn't move anymore.

Tesla works just fine for the current generations and beyond.

It is exactly what DeLorean did and everyone thought he was crazy at the time. Why wait for model years to upgrade things when you can do it right now! This led to much confusion over what options various cars had since he just changed things like antenna design and placement, gas cap or no gas cap, body panels, and all that sort thing just whenever.

If you want longer range, you want to keep that extra motor for the AWD versions going. Yes that's right the AWD version is more efficient than the single motor version, by 4% to almost 20% depending on the driving conditions.

Super cool Tesla patent here: CONTROL SYSTEM FOR AN ALL-WHEEL DRIVE ELECTRIC VEHICLE - Patent application

This is gasser mentality. Instead of coddling people just force them to adapt. All this "easing" does is prevent the technology from furthering. Eventually the old farts that don't understand how electrics work will die off and nobody will be worried about range. Think of all the kids who's parents are now driving Teslas and Leafs. They never run out of charge and can do everything their friends cars can all while being quiet, fast, and fun. They aren't going to have the same prejudices that the current folks have to "overcome".

This is essentially the blinking empty gas notification when you have 2 gallons reserve. The only reason people don't think empty means empty is because it doesn't anymore. Just make it what it should be. When it says 0 miles left, you have 0 miles left. Only an idiot would go against that, and most likely only once.

But not before giving the company a headache from all the whining, multiplied by 10s of thousands.

If there was ever a company that could finally correct the "customer is always right" mentality, I think it is Tesla.

yea .... IOW - that's what's in their pants .... because the poor Hellcat slobs can't do that - even running non - street tires. You only get to be fastest in the west until the next gun slinger rides in to town.

funny - no sooner do you mention longer range, then Tesla ups the ante. They now offer the 90 kWh version. So each new REV seems to be coming up with more power and more range. Most likely that will mean the older stuff will be quicker and easier to pick up on the cheap.

have now lived with my Model S P90D since October and loving it every time I take it out. The rush that you get when you can go faster than most cars is a real high. The first time on a freeway, I saw a clearing and stepped on it. The sensation of getting planted to your seat and feel the blood flowing back from your forehead is mind blowing. The P90D felt extremely steady, surefooted, secure and under control. As I looked into the rear view mirror and saw those who got left in the wake grow smaller I glanced down at the speedo and it said 120mph. Yowza! so I lift my foot off the accelerator and the regenertive braking came into effect and slowed the car down. And I wasn't even in the LUDICROUS Mode.
I have only driven it once in LUDICROUS Mode and its insane fast and it is something I felt when I tested the Bugatti Veyron before.
I had been frustrated being passed by other cars when driving the Prius but now I have a faster efficient car. However when My wife drove it for the first time, she was driving carefully and slow. Soon some one honked from behind and angrily passed us. It was a Prius! Oh well.

We know you think it's expensive. You've let us know your viewpoint on that numerous times. Thank you for sharing though. Very helpful.

I saw that. Apparently the 3rd fastest production car ever and the only one with more than 2 seats.

The 300 mile range (315?) is on the more realistic US rating too. Just hope Tesla keep grounded and that they don't lose focus on the '3' aiming for more expensive, super fast models like the P100D.

I priced one out and it tops out at about $152,000 Tesla also updated the P90D's 0-60 time to a more realistic 3 seconds. Another thing about the 1/4 mile that Tesla claimed to be 10.9 seconds that everyone wasn't able to achieve in real life. Well, the new front end helped the Model S P90D achieve that time. I guess it's helped with the high speed aerodynamics.

ev ¼mile times also relate to their traction pack's SOC. Imagine a flashlight bulb getting dim as your AAA's power source get depleted .... Similarly, the Model S's ¼mile time slowes .... in the same way gassers start to sputter when there's very little fuel hitting the gas tank's fuel pickup. On board PC's ability to diminish high power nearing low SOC actually acts as a range preservation technique, just like the top end of prius packs that never get fully charged. The middle makes a happy battery

I'm sure people who race Tesla's know to fully charge their Model S before taking it down to the track or tow it if the track is too far away. This is not Top Gear.
