I have a Door Open light on my dash, and I checked all the plungers on each the doors. I am guessing it is because of my rear hatch not being shown as closed. What tells the rear hatch that it is closed, and where is it located? I am looking to find it and take it apart to check it out for any damage, so that the Door light will turn of and hence allow me to lock my car with my remote again.

So something in the hatch area is telling my car that the hatch is open, but i cannot figure out where to start.. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Maybe some debris got in there and it can't fully close. Check the latch area for debris

Look in the bottom of the hatch latch. Another person found a stone in there that prevented his hatch from closing properly.

I have done this. I have inspected the lock area, and tried cleaning it some, etc, but it looks like, and i could be wrong, somebody in the past has pulled on the lever too hard, and had fixed it... how i dont know. but this problem is getting old, and always have to push the lock button to lock the door..

Is it difficult to get in there and maybe take it apart with tools, and figure out the situation. I know my way around elecronics, so i am guessing some sort of broken piece of equipment that is causing this. Has anyone ever disassembled the hatch area on the hatch door itself, or on the car itself, and might now what i should look for?

Hatch has no mechanism in it. It only has open and lock switches and you already know that they work so no need to open it up. Just remove the underfloor storage box and pull out the big panel that covers the latch (deck trim cover) (it just pulls up). Mechanism is simple so you should be able to tell if something is wrong with it. If it looks fine just test the measure the switch that tells if it’s closed.

there is a thread by patrick wong for replacing the hatch button rubber, might be worth a read.

the guy who found the pebble removed two screws and a plastic cover iirc.

Hey guys, Good news! I fixed the problem! To recap... The Car was saying there was a door open, and therefore i couldnt use my remote! So as per the suggested advice about maybe having something stuck in the slot where the hatch closes in the back, I went and checked again with a flashlight and found two random loose screws and a little piece of metal, all of which managed to find their way in there! So i got out some pliers and remoted the 2 screws and the piece of metal, and TA-DA! It works now! Thanks so much guys for all of your suggestions.
Here is a pic below of the screws I found in it..

Yep! That fixed it man! Thanks so much!
There were 2 screws wedged in it!

Now you have to figure out where the screws and metal came from...

Ha, thats what I thought, but they don't seem to be from the car, they were most likely from when my brother in law borrowed the car, and had a tool box in there with a bunch of misc screws and stuff in it. I am so glad it was something so simple as well, because its great to be able to use the lock and unlock, as well as the proximity feature to open the doors etc. I have a check engine light on now though, and need to take it to toyota this week. I would like to find out the best cheapest way to find out which codes its throwing, so i can look them up myself. I remember on my old GM cars, you could use a paper clip to check which codes it was.

Does anyone happen to know the easiest way to find out what codes are?

Many autoparts stores will read them for free because they want to sell you parts. ;)

The best way, which is pretty cheap, is to buy Mini VCI.

If only the check engine light is on, and your local auto parts store will lend out a generic OBD-II code reader, that will probably be sufficient to read the logged DTC.

Good idea! Especially in my case.... I wish i could say i live close to Advanced Auto Parts, but that would be an overstatement, because when i open my back door, their store is directly in front of my condo. If i walk out my door, I could be in their front door in about 20 seconds flat. It has come in handy when you need parts or happen to need a quick cheap tool.

Had the same problem. Read this thread and looked over the latch mechanism carefully. I had already checked the door buttons and they seemed to work properly.
Back latch seemed fine, but the careful inspection made me notice that the rubber casket had come off it's mounting edge from one side to the other. I recall it opened kind of 'funny' with an odd 'pop', but it was dark, and I was tired from a long drive home, so that didn't quite register until I tried to lock up.
The the car showed an [open door] error, and after multiple tries of ALL the doors (yes, the back did close and latch), I found the gasket displacement. Put it back, closed right, error light went away, and it locked.

I had same problem, had just replaced the tailgate struts. Using a flashlight I checked the tailgate latch pocket and found a small piece of the strut had fallen into it, removed it, reset the tailgate latch and closed the tailgate and the remote now locked the car. Thanks
