    That is all well and good. But, we will see what the real build date of the vehicles which will be on the placard along with the tire pressure, etc.

    I will bet that Toyota has made a pilot run of Gen4 Prius. They have to build at least fifty cars. Emissions and crash testing has to be performed before any orders or sales.

    no doubt, toyota won't be over anticipating the market. i'm sure they are aware of gas prices and tacoma/sequoia sales. the will likely try to keep a short supply to help keep prices up.

    Interesting. I spoke with someone in the world of Toyota this weekend who mentioned a very specific "61 mpg". In response I mentioned how this is about a 20% improvement in mpg and quite a bit higher that what Toyota has let on so far. I didn't press for how this person came to that number. Not holding my breath as a 10% improvement sounds much more realistic.

    So these guys driving the test car get 56.5mpg for 3,333 miles if I am reading this correctly, Maybe it is 60.

    Good point. Anyone know what numbers were showing on the gen 3 Prius test mules for comparison? Something around mid to upper 40s would support this "61 mpg" number for the next Prius.

    I don't know what 40km per liter of Gen IV Japan cycle translates to, compared to current Gen's Japan cycle.

    50 mpg does go to 61 mpg by simple conversion if using the very generous Japanese test cycle numbers with a new 40km/L going from Gen 3 to 4. Still skeptical this will pan out with US EPA numbers, sounds too good to be true.

    Gen III: under MLIT's newer JC08 test cycle, the vehicle has a fuel efficiency of 32.6km/l.

    Not an expert at Math, if it is 40 km per liter, so 7.4 km per liter difference would represent a 22.6% increase.

    EPA gives the Gen 3 Prius 50 mpg combined. Multiply that by 40/32.6 and you get 61 mpg.

    So 61 mpg. That would be nice, but only if it is true. Wait and see, gentlemen. Real world mileage? 50 or so? Anybody have an educated guess? EPA figures are done so differently than real world mpg.

    the thing is, the epa score doesn't always translate. on the gen II, i was able to hyper mile some sweet numbers. on the gen III, toyota programed the computers to do that for me, so i wasn't able to increase it as much. this one will be interesting.

    Look at iplug's post #374, all we are saying is:
    We did get 50 mpg for Japan' Gen III 32.6 km per liter,
    then 61 mpg would correspond to 40 km per liter of Gen IV.

    The 61mpg might be for the lithium ion option if its a higher capacity pack.

    The redesigned Prius is expected to use a nickel-metal hydride battery pack and is expected to be rated at about 55 mpg in combined city and highway driving, dealers who attended the meeting said.
    An "eco grade" version will be rated at more than 60 mpg, and will likely use lithium ion batteries, the dealers said.

    Can Prius set the pace again?

    With my Gen 2, I can get 48 to 50 mpg. But the reality is I have to sit and wait a lot, too. So, in the real world, I get more like 40 to 42 mpg. If a Gen 3 can get 50 mpg every time, maybe I should forget Gen 4 and get a good used Gen 3 version 5.

    Now I am wondering if mpg will be higher on the Li-on battery G4? Will it be cost effective to get Li-on over NiMH? Why does Toyota stick with Ni-MH? Sorry for the silly questions I am considering pro's and con's of Gen Four.

    Thanks, Sergiospl. That explains why the dealers were excited about Gen 4. I know that VW's TDI is very good, but I believe the Japanese have much better build quality in my opinion.. I did read the article you posted. Prius Marketing, yes!

    For me In the graph, 55 mpg is enough, 60 mpg is for bragging rights, :D
