Thank you both. Jdonalds, did you mean to share an image/link? Not seeing it.

Nevermind, found it. Amazon code isn't working.

Speaking of spare tires and safety: a fair number of PIP owners are buying spares, and carrying them loose in the hatch area. I hate to think what they'd do in a crash.

I didn't measure it, but I could touch both seats at the same time with my thumb and ring finger, and I have small hands.

Good idea. It might well be corralled by the rear seat back, but I wouldn't count on it.

I doubt it. Let's see, put a 50 to 60 lbs projectile loose in ANY car. It's a killer.

Why not a Continental kit? You could put the license plate in the center of it or above it. It would offer crash protection instead of a crash projectile.

    For the record, I don't like multi-quote.
One flat I got was in the middle of the desert where no cell phone service was available. If i could pump the tire with goo, that would have worked. That was on a gravel road. I don't travel on that road at night, or anytime where changing tires would bum me out.

Nevermind - death object in a high speed crash. Just latch it on the roof to add character to the car.

Spend 30 grand on car and then start cobbling together a spare? Not happening.

And in certain European countries, you're required to carry spare light bulbs (one headlight, one indicator, one brake light) and a high visibility jacket. (It's also one reason why MB has a feature that uses the nearest equivalent bulb if the car determines one of your lights is blown)

We've had a flat with every car we've own (just one and no more lol.. weird). Never had to use the spare. The one time I actually tried swapping the tyres and the tools that Toyota gave me couldn't even get the lug nuts off the alloys so even with a spare, that was no good.

Yup. I'm an urban driver. If I have a flat, I pump up the tyre and drive to the nearest automotive shop to have it plugged. Rural drivers should carry a spare.

You can also partially quote posts so you don't have to quote (or multi-quote) the entire long post if you only wanted to respond to a portion of it. Simply highlight the words and when you let go of the LMB, a small pop-up will appear asking if you would like to add it to a multi-quote or simply reply to those selected words immediately.

It is. The spare is heavier than the stock alloys.

Honda did that with the Fit (the last gen. I don't know if they did the same for the latest one that was just launched). Honda did the mpg test and everything without a spare tyre and then offered it as a dealer-installed accessory.

Good quality tyres won't save you from screws! But yeah at least you have a fighting chance.

One trick that I remembered from a video a long time ago is to buckle the rear seatbelts, particularly the rear centre one to minimise the chance of cargo going in between the split folding seats (which is the weak point since the edge of the seat backs have the latch to hold it back).

If you really want to cover your bases, use the straps that are included with the Prius to secure the rear seats. Tie each end to the D ring at the back of the cargo area (the D rings closest to the rear seatback) and loop the strap around the rear seat (so it goes into the passenger compartment side of the seatback). This works if you have a lot of smaller items that the strap may not hold back so it's easier to secure the seatback instead of the cargo. If your cargo is large, then you can wrap it around the cargo within the cargo area.

Tideland I won't even attempt to quote you, especially on an iPhone. That's hands down the MOTHER of all multi quotes. Anyway:

Regarding your difficulty loosening lug nuts, I'll bet it's due to "pros" rotating your tire with air tools doing final torque.

If torqued to around 80 lb/ft, it's no problem, especially if you partially loosen while car is on ground still.

    :D:D:D

I was a couple of pages behind on this thread

Yeah you're right. It's most likely the technicians using powered tools when they do the tyre rotations.

Everyone knows the only proper way to stow a spare tire is on the side with buckled leather straps and above/within the running boards. Like this:
