Except for the hundreds to thousands of other car fires that happened in the past week.
Is the Prius, or any hybrid, mainstream enough that one catching fire is no longer news worthy?

I don't understand the above comment about the thread being populated by those espousing "anti-EV propaganda." Where did that come from? A discussion of EV is just as important in a discussion of hybrids as range is when talking about rockets.

But I will agree, this threat tends to get off topic. And Toyota is the blame for that. Toyota's absolute silence on the new Prius gives rise to all sorts of speculation, and one things leads to another, and suddenly the thread is about all kinds of other discussions.
I don't suppose that PriusChat has any official standing with Toyota, but there certainly is a congregation of Prius enthusiast. We are a Prius "base." (in a political context). I would have thought that Toyota would show some respect for their "base." A few tid-bits. A lot of future sales will come from the readers of PC. Sadly, a few have defected the brand, because of Toyota's silence policy.

Sadly, Honda is similar. Both are cut from the wizard-of-oz school.

Oh, but they're not "silent". They will speak on Tuesday! Only then will it be "time". ;)

All vehicles can catch fire. You have an electric fuel pump in your gas tank. Then you have gasoline pressurized to sixty or more pounds per square inch. So you have two components needed for fire, then add an ignition source.

All we know about the Gen four Prius being a hybrid. How many volts are in the HV battery? Will it have direct injection? Who knows? Nobody but Toyota, and I am sure we will all know soon.

To compare the Mirai to the Hindenberg is asinine. The Hindenberg "caught fire" seventy-eight years ago. And it still has not been proven it exploded on its own it had some "help". For that matter, they were smoking on the Hindenberg, too. Hydrogen will burn easily, but again Toyota has built IN or many, many safety features to keep this "exploding" from happening.

Plus, the dirigible had magnesium components for their lightweight. If magnesium catches fire, there really is no way to put it out. Race cars used to have "mag wheels" for the lightweight and less unsprung weight on the suspension. But, if the tire goes flat, the wheel grinding in the roadway would cause sparks and burn the vehicle to the ground. "Mag" wheels eventually were outlawed from racing, period. History repeats itself if we don't remember it.JTM

Magnesium alloys are making a come back to cut weight.
Alloys that have higher ignition temps.

Well, Hindenberg is just the first, but many other notable hydrogen explosions have since occurred. I'll let the brave 300 in and around Hollywood test the safety mechanisms put into place and wish them the best of luck.

Sorry, but the "Hindenberg" disaster IS the historical 'metaphor' for hydrogen gas's explosiveness and danger.

Come on fellow PC'ers. Just one more day until the G4 is revealed. Let's make an effort to keep our discussions on topic thereafter.

Wrong though it may be. The Hindenberg didn't explode and the people that got burned did so because of falling diesel fuel.

We plan on one thread in near real-time, along with some specific follow ups starting tomorrow night at the reveal. All PC moderators (and the rest of the Prius Expert team) are already in Vegas for this premiere. With any luck, we'll be able to provide the most expansive coverage of any media outlet.

We'll probably start a new featured, sticky, and locked thread to keep it clean.

I think there should be a separate thread for these Chatters who are only interested in discussing how the car looks.

Would be awesome 'cause sometimes in the middle of discussing Tech/Specs, one guy usually jumps in and quickly posts: "It's ugly". :D

How is Toyota to blame for ones freedom of speech? Toyota does not have to reveal any news on their products until they feel like doing so. If you want to defect to another brand I am sure they will not lose any sleep over it. ;)
