Personal Opinion; As a designer, that back end appears as though another Toy-team designed it the mashed it onto the main body then nose of the car. The odd protruding girth below/aside what I am assuming to be the Reverse light is the bugger. It is creating a less-desirable looking hour-glass shape than I had hoped for. I'm liking the effect and dynamic of the LED brake/running light array... its just all this angular and kinked sheet metal that surrounds it that's not feeling 'right' to me...

Then, Interior. Those pre-80's oval Corolla-looking air vent diffusers... I'd like to visit with the design team... What were they thinking???

Do we get turn-signal mirrors yet?

    Seats = Great!
    Front nose design = Great!
    Steering wheel = Great!

Anxious to experience this in person...

i'm sorry, but i think they kinda blew it. the back is a mess. the 3/4 view has those awful geo-metro like rakes along the backside...the front looks like a mirai, which is to say chopped up and unbalanced. the side view is the nicest, in my opinion, but it all goes to hell once the angle shifts.

i was hoping that the new models would have matured into less of a science project and more of a conservative, high-tech sedan. I really like my Gen II prius, but was hoping they'd focus more on space, comfort and utility and less on bringing concept car looks to the showroom.

maybe it'll grow on me....maybe i'll get a few more years on my 2005 and then get a volt. major disappointment.

Konakahuna.....even if you don't like it and never buy one, you'll still have to ride in one if you call a taxi.

Just looking at the autoblog pics at the moment. I like it.

I really like the interior though. Throw back to the Gen II in many respects yet all space shippy.

I guess I'm one of the few that likes this thing though.

So I want to look at the relative dimensions:
    • Nose is squished and tail sticks out - that is where the extra length went and then some
    • More cabin crush space - a good thing in any frontal accident
    • Tail taper nice slope - is better but there is no evidence of flow separation on current Prius
    • Under-body wedge - I like because it leads to low pressure area under car to 'suck' air down and in towards tail . . . poor man's side air dam.
    • Tail height - not too fond of this extra 1" or so height but mitigated by under-body wedge
    Grill shutters:

    Thank you Tony!!

ps. Using a Toyota photo loaded later:
    • wheelbase used to adjust scale
    • problems upper photo
      • camera offset make nose look smaller (farther away)
      • slight diagonal angle makes it look longer
    • problems lower photo
      • camera show ~1/2 degree rotate lowering front to appear level
Using a camera to 'blueprint' is a technique that requires paying attention to camera and object. Things in foreground are 'larger' and at an angle, longer. But sometimes you have to deal with what you got as best you can.

Toyota has plenty of conservative high-tech sedans for people who want them. I want a space-age hatchback. That's always been what the Prius has been about, back to the original design sketches.

Does it also look like the front end of the Gen4 is lower vs the Gen3? Those side shots give off a rake vibe.

Even accounting for the photo effects, the car was not 90 degrees to the camera as we see the steering wheel, it still looks like the front is a little lower. Also, the press release touted the front badge being the same height as an earlier sports car.

4th gen looks sleeker and longer, 3rd gen looks more bubble-like with sharp drop from roof peak to spoiler.
4th gen lower front angles up a bit in photo. Should help reduce scrapes on driveways.
4th gen steering wheel appears closer to driver, but we don't know where either is adjusted.
4th gen taillight (side view) sleeker than boomerang shape of 3rd gen
4th gen wheels are really sharp!

Now that we see the car as a whole, I can say that I think the side profile of the car is decent looking, even an improvement over the Gen 3. That said, the front and rear styling are very unattractive in my eyes.. If they gave this thing decent front end and rear end styling I think it'd be a decent looking car. The interior looks to have much improved materials, but I could do without the white plastic.

Fins! I feel young again. Just babies now, but wait for the next gen. I think Toyota should get away from duck-lips grills (it's not so bad on the Prius but some other models, wow).

Seriously, I wouldn't reject buying a Prius because FINS but maybe Toyota could add a chrome appearance package to complement the fins.:)

I can see the new Gen 4 now, in the lot next to a current v. "Hey!", the Gen 4 said to the v, "why's your big mouth always open?"

The 17" wheels which I also think looks very sharp, is really a black wheel with 5 individual plastic silver pieces for aerodynamics which can be available in different colors. I don't know what to think!

So, Atlas Genius was the band playing at the unveiling event?!? Their sound is certainly what the 4G Prius is hoping to exude - a young, propulsive and synth-heavy electro-pop band sounding like a second-rate version of The Killers. Highly polished and energetic but vaguely generic. Still coasting from their one big hit "Trojans" in 2013, but unlikely to top that in the future.

Sergiospl, yes, I saw John point out the 5 silver plastic inserts in the 17" wheel in Periscope walk through. That's a way to save weight.

I'll have to see these wheels for myself.
