I'm possibly purchasing a 2005 prius with 110k miles. I'm downgrading due to a lower payment. I currently have a Rav4. This will be my first hybrid, and I'm hoping I make a good decision. I haven't talked to financing yet, so I am not sure if it comes with a warranty. I'm buying it for $8,995. Any thoughts?

9 grand? is it the solid gold special edition?
Im trying to sell an 04 for $4300 and and 05 for $4500 both are rust free florida cars...little interest due to low gas prices.
you can get a 2010 for 9 grand off e bay all day long

how much will it reduce your payment? is this a trade at a toyota dealer?

a 10 year old hybrid with 110,000 miles may need some fairly major service. accidents and maintenance records are extremely important. you will also need a few thousand in the bank, in the unlikely event that there is a major systems failure.

My payment will go down $118 a month. And I'd save a lot on gas and a small amount on insurance. I'm not sure how much on gas.

I'm feeling like this a really bad idea.

Yes it is at a Toyota dealership

well, you have a vehicle under warranty , so no major headaches to wonder about. and about $1,400. per year savings. how many miles do you drive per year?

any possibility of buying and selling privately? that would save you the $3-4,000. the dealer is going to make.

I drive about 8k a year. I've driven less recently only because gas prices has been high.

with the interest you will be paying over 12,000 for a car that might be worth 3000 when you make your last payment, low miles does not always make for a good car. they will all need work sooner or later

if you only drive 8000 miles a year a hybrid isn't going to help you much, get a Camry that gets almost 35 mpg, cheaper to buy and maintain.
9 grand for anything 10 years old is just insane these days, shop around

you're not going to save much on gas at 8-?,000 miles a year. so figure $1500. a year, not too bad, but i would like to see you in a newer prius with a better deal than what they are offering you.

or, since the gas saving aren't that big, maybe look at some non hybrids that might cost less?

That price sounds high to me too. I wouldn't dissuade you from purchasing a 2nd-gen Prius but you may want to keep looking for one that's a better value.

Also, you might consider selling the RAV4 yourself rather than doing a dealership trade. Dealerships make quite a lot of money on any trade, even to a lower-cost car.

I'm limited to where I live. We only have one Toyota dealership. The next closest one has a bad rep and I've dealt with them.

honda, mazda, hyundai, other? and you can negotiate. first thing to do is look at your cars on kbb.com to find the values. at least your armed with knowledge before making a counter offer.

More like $5,500-$6,500 sounds about right to me. Have the vehicle totally checked out before purchasing.

Good luck with whatever your decision is

Although they went down to $7,950 and gave me a refund of $1400 on my warranty. They wouldn't pay offthe whole amount of my Rav4. As the day progressed, I felt that I was going too far back in getting an '05. It didn't even have an AUX jack to plug my phone in. I was okay without Bluetooth, but need to at least be able to listen to music. And I don't do cds. I would have been able to get a warranty, but it wouldn't have covered anything I was mostly worried about, the batteries. I was being talked down to and talked over because I am a woman. First time that has happened at this dealer. I've bought almost all of my cars from them. Although it was a great financial savings, I ultimately had to pass on the Prius. I enjoyed learning about the Prius and everyone's help on this forum. I would look in the future at Prius'. My dream car is a Toyota Corolla. So I think I am going to look into that route. I now know what I want and what I'm comfortable with paying, so the search remains on going.

Thank your all of your help!
