If it's only during warmup, I wouldn't worry about it. The arc is unstable, and the metallic halide salts are being ionized. Once warmed up, the arc should be stable and flicker free.

"Once warmed up". Leading up to that is what worries me. I'll have to ask TRS, but I don't have flickering any longer.

This is simply untrue. There is a good 12v source in the engine compartment fuse box, seen here, under the removed cover, next to the screwdriver at the top center of the picture in this previous post:

    Hello Kevin,

Thanks for the email as well as the bit of patience while waiting on a response to it. The HD Relay harness would technically be the appropriate harness for your vehicle, but the issue becomes finding a place to tap into power under the hood. There's no battery up front to connect the relay harness too, and the fuse panel under the hood has this weird post that's got voltage, whereas most would have a threaded post and nut there you could still fasten the relay harness to. Previous versions of the Prius actually had this post, but around 2013 the removed it.

As such we recommend the standalone canbus harnesses for your application. They're technically error canceling harnesses designed for european vehicles from the year 2000 or newer (approximately).

Thanks Kevin! Please let us know if there's anything else we can help out with!

So it's been raining here all day I've watched for flickering again on warm up twice today and have seen no flickering. I now believe it was, in fact, my imagination last night.

It wasn't your imagination. When I first remove the Canbus relay I seen it flicker, but afterwards I have seen that happen.

Today when I turned on my headlights the left side wouldn't turn on. This is without the Canbus relay. I'm going to have to return this. Sad...I really liked it.

I've been looking at this kit to buy.

What all is needed to get this kit to work flawlessly?

What type of bulb H11a or b?

Which harness- HD relay or canbus?

Do you need to order the anti flicker capcitor?

    Thanks

What is the difference between the h11 a and h11b bulb type?

I am going to be sending my kit back to TRS so that they test it. Will keep everyone posted.

Ground wire position. B type has ground wire opposite from the largest of the three tabs on the bulb base. A type has the ground wire located in the middle of the largest tab.

B type is for reflector type headlights, A type is for projector headlights.

It's been said before, they're not ready for prime time. They're bright, but don't have good down range illumination, and dispersion.

You can see in the image, on the linked page, that there is little to no light cast forward and to the rear. Light going forward goes out of the lighting fixture, and light going rearward gets reflected forward. Those LEDs cast all their light out to the sides where it isn't focused well.

I can see your point. What would you do in my case? I definitely do not want to go back to the stock halogens, but at the same time I cannot trust the sporadic issues this TRS HID kit is giving me either.

Right now I'm using 5500k TRS bulbs. I also have a set of 4300k HID bulbs from another manufacturer. Should I try and install those just to see if I continue to have the same issue of one headlight turning on when I manually switch them on? Or is the main issue the ignitor or ballast?

If your problem was limited to only one side, then you would maybe have a component issue (bulb, ballast, igniter).

The fact that your HID bulbs don't reliably ignite on both sides leads me to this conclusion:

Your ballasts/igniters aren't getting enough current through your factory wiring to reliably light your HID bulbs.

I highly recommend using an HID relay that routes power to your ballasts directly from a reliable power source (usually the battery, but in the Prius, a terminal/bolt in the engine compartment fuse box). Doing this completely bypasses the oem headlight circuit for power, it only uses it for a turn on signal (low power) to activate the relay(s) in the HID harness.

By not using a relay harness, you are tasking your factory headlight circuit with supplying high voltage, initially, to the ballasts/igniters, something the factory circuit was not designed to do.
