I have a 2015 Prius. when I operate the ventilation system without using the AC, and the air on by-pass I get a rear bad smell. In reading other forums this appears to be a known issue. Has anyone found a solution through Toyota? With 6500 mile I should not be needing to spray disinfectants etc into the ac system.

Have you changed the cabin filter? Recently? Get the cabin filter with the charcoal filter built-in! - hope this helps;)

I agree, get a charcoal filter for the cabin filter. Will keep the air fresh. And don't let the dealer do it, DIY.

How much are you using the AC, what percentage of your driving?

should come with a charcoal filter. turn the a/c off and put the fan on high a few minutes before reaching your destination. take it to the dealer for warranty service.
another possibility is a dead mouse.

idk, because you have to make sure the a/c is off. perhaps someone who runs on auto can help.

But if it's on Auto the manual states that you shouldn't touch anything including the a/c button.

you can certainly adjust the temperature, what good would auto be without that. if you touch anything else, it turns off aotu. you can turn it back on next time you start up.

The temperature is a given, but it says not to touch anything else.

True, but I'm trying to figure out what's causing the odor.

I always use "Auto" (…well, most of the time! :D). BTW if I use "Auto", I usually hit the A/C button also (if I don't need the air-conditioner). 90% of the time I let the computer decide (…well, you don't keep a dog and bark yourself!) (…well, perhaps you do!) o_O

Hit it as in turn it off? Why would you need a/c if it's freezing and why would Auto leave it on at all times no matter if it's cold or warm? That's where the odor is settling in I take it.

I only have the A/C on if there's moisture in the air which might either fog up the windies (in the winter) or stop me losing heat via the natural process of sweating (i.e. in the summer). As I said earlier, most of the time I let it do its own thing, and it usually works out fine. I think your best bet (so far) is dead mousie, or perhaps mold, or perhaps someone spilt milk or ice-cream on the seats or carpets?
