2016 Prius or 2016 Volt...Which should I buy?

I'm not sure what you are trying to imply, but it wasn't a matter of opinion. I was responding to a comment about Toyota's reliability, and they in fact have their issues as well. Your graph doesn't show the different years, but if it did, you'd see it confirms exactly what I said about the older Prius and the Tacoma, although I don't think Consumer Reports captured the problems with the Tacoma X-Runner due to the rarity of the model. The $4000 repair bill wasn't a matter of "opinion" either. I could do without whatever nonsense you were trying to insinuate. Yes, the newer Prius has proven to be reliable, but to claim that Toyota is without their issues is false. I posted two graphs from your chosen source to confirm my statements. Another point about surveys is they only capture the "opinion" of the respondents, so it actually is a matter of opinion, contrary to what you have claimed. The Technical Service Bulletins (TSB) would tell a more accurate, and different story than the opinions of Consumer Reports you chose cite, at least for the year models that I specifically mentioned.

Actually, my graph shows that your opinion is not relevant at all. It shows differences between different makes - it does not mean that Toyota is perfect, just that it is a lot better than average.

I have no idea what do you mean to suggest with TSBs... every Toyota vehicle has at least 50 TSBs issued during its model cycle. All of them have various issues. Point is that they have much less issues on average than competition. Literally every singe Toyota has a lot of them issued per year. TSB's are for Toyota mechanics so they know how to problems that customers bring in.

What you are trying to "insinuate" is that your personal experience equals everyone's and that TSB's mean that a. every vehicle suffers the issue b. TSB's are unique to Toyota's. No, they dont and No they are not.

What reliability stats do is compare these issues to other manufacturers. CR's survey compares 3 years of ownership experience. For instance, JD Powers Vehicle Dependability Survey shows more stricter dependability issues in past 3 years of vehicle ownership.

I drove the volt. It was fine. With current gas prices it's barely worth plugging in, but gas won't be low forever.

Resale on a prius will be higher, look how bad it is on current volts. I can lease a 2015 volt (outgoing model) with $0 out of pocket at about $230/month. Any EV right now is almost like a cellphone. You can buy a basically brand new Nissan Leaf for about $15k, too.

2016 Volt middle rear seat IS usable, but barely. Volt appears to have less interior capacity.

The Prius lineup (the entire lineup) drives terribly with absolutely no power anywhere, at any time. The Volt will pummel any Prius to death off the line and I'm not talking about racing only, but simply having a car with available power. The Volt feels quicker with a lot of low-end torque--you'd need to drive one to appreciate the torque benefits of a proper EV drivetrain.

IMO if you really want to geek out on some new tech the Volt is your car. I owned a Leaf for a while and the EV drivetrains are really nice (and unlike the Leaf the Volt won't leave you stranded in the winter after 40 miles). If you want objectively the most responsible, practical car, the Prius still reigns supreme. Your fuel savings of electricity over gas even at $4/gallon compared to a Prius will not be that substantial and, I should add, constantly plugging a car in and out all the time is a bit of a hassle.

The main complaint I had when I drove the 2016 volt was it felt like I was about to spend $30k on what amounted to essentially a chevy cruze. So instead I bought an Avalon Hybrid for just a tiny bit more money instead

 

Test drive a 2016. You're in for a surprise. The 0-30 acceleration has quite a kick now.

 

An Avalon Hybrid is just a bit more than $30k!?!? Like $7k more at list without a single option or taxes. Typical is more like $42k at my dealer.

PS I drive the slowest of the Prius line, the v. I've never needed any extra acceleration. I plan ahead and look three times. If I can't make it, I wait. Came from a series of Porsches too so it isn't like I don't like acceleration.

 

Also, the $7,500 federal tax credit which applies to the Volt and not the Avalon.

So MSRP $33.2k - $7,500 = $25,700 for the Volt versus ~$38,100 for the Avalon hybrid (neither price includes delivery fee, taxes, etc.) so not at all in the same price range....

Also, also, the Volt's powertrain provides a very different and much nicer driving experience than a Chevy Cruze.

i wouldn't hesitate to buy a volt if it fit my needs
