Thought I'd post if anyone had any remarkable idea.
But here is my minor problem.

For some reason, the decal, marking on my park button is fading. Which is strange because I hardly ever use my Park button. The majority of the time I park and turn off my Prius I just hit the power button, which automatically put's it in park. So I rarely use the park button. So I find it strange that it's the button that is showing the most deterioration and wear. But for whatever reason, it is.

All the other buttons are holding up well.

    So what do I do?

I've thought of buying some flat white paint, and a very, very fine brush and trying to paint in the markings before they fade any further, but I'm afraid of how that might look, and/or if I have a steady enough hand and good enough eye to actually do it with anything near acceptable success.

I'm guessing there might be nothing I can do. I doubt Toyota just sells the button or decal.

Maybe I should just try to totally remove it, after all I've heard it's better to burn out than fade away. Although the older I get the more I disagree with that battle cry.

    Any ideas?

Well, if it was my car, I would be inclined to scrub the rest of it off and let the button be blank. Touching it up freehand might be okay, but I see a lot of potential to mess up inadvertently and end up with it looking worse.

A pic for reference. No embossing to guide the paint. Maybe so they can use different symbols around the world. Seems cheap.

I'd vote just leave it, let it do what it's gonna do.

I touch my Park button at least 12 times a day since the last 3 years and I do not see any paint fading at all................ weird.
I would cover the button with a translucent mate decal sticker or clear scotch tape, then trim the edges wit a razor blade to mitigate the problem.

    I don't know what happened.
I use the same materials when I clean the whole interior.

Seems like "something" got on that particular button.

I'm blaming the Dealership Service Department. I have no proof...but why not?

my '12 is like brand new, and i use the park button. i wonder if they went to a more environmentally friendly paint, i notice they wear off the street much faster.

Replace it with an "eject" sticker or decal. I suspect whatever is coming in contact with the button is a solvent for that ink. There was a woman in my department that wore the printing off the keys of her keyboard.

On airplanes I used dayglo orange decals that said "REMOVE BEFORE FLIGHT!!" to mark aileron and rudder locks, pitot tube covers, etc. Maybe something like that would work? A completely unlabeled button would give me, as a pilot, an extreme worry if I were operating a new-to-me vehicle, so I would favor relabeling in some fashion.

Good idea, but first I need a video of mice actually doing the damage.

Go to Staples or some other similar store and find the "vinyl letter sheets". You can get them in white and other colours. Clean and degrease the button, and put a "P" on it over the faded one. When it wears off, get another from the sheet and put it on.
How well do they stick? I put a bunch of them on my outside mailbox and so far they are just fine, after 20 years. Though the sun is slowly etching the edges away. ;)

Well I am pretty sure you can just buy that button brand new from the dealership and replace it. Most buttons you can do that with. Or a salvage pull like on eBay.

But if you want to DIY, then do it similar to what Toyota did and screen it over a mask. Using a laser cutter or vinyl cutter, you cut a vinyl negative. Everywhere there is white, you cut out. Put that on transfer tape and then stick that to the button and remove the transfer tape. Now you have a big vinyl thing covering the button with just the "P" and square open to the plastic underneath. Get some super awesome paint or modelling paint or whatever and just brush it on top willy-nilly. Wait a bit but before it dries carefully remove your stencil. After it fully dries you will have a perfect design.

This shouldn't be happening, BUT be forewarned...if you have dirty/contaminated hands, everything you touch can be adversely affected and painted-on decals can wear off very quickly when exposed to the right chemicals.

Just to chime in: this shouldn't be happening. And this is not a cheap TV remote, it's a 25 grand "flagship" vehicle.

Robert Holt makes a very good point: you shouldn't have an unidentified button.

I'm not sure about the '13s, but on my '10, the square P park button is back-lit. If you mess with it, it could affect it from being visible at night. How about a picture of it? Are you sure it's not just some dirt from your finger? Does it illuminate at night?

Get a big nasty Sharpie and crudely scrawl a "P" on it.

No, just kidding. Yeah, see if you can get some stick-on letters sounds good. Again, this might be a slumbering recall issue: it's not good if critical car controls are having their logos rub off.

The pristine condition of ours (pictured above) is testimony to our NEVER using it. If we're stopped, just shut it down, automatically in Park.

Anybody know what happens if you accidentally push "P" when car is in motion at a high velocity?
In the old days, throwing the transmission into Park was a last-ditch way to slow a runaway vehicle after a total brake failure, but it would trash the transmission. Not sure about post 2000 cars in general and the Gen 3 Prius in particular.
