My 2006, owned since 2010, Prius' dashboard lit up. Took it in, and was told it was overheating and needs a new water pump (not sure why 4 lights went off for just that). Was quoted at $650 for parts and labor, plus tax = $700. The car has over 150K miles on it, multiple bumps and bruises (was a college car), and leaks when it rains heavily. All that in mind, is it worth fixing to get the car working well again? I am able to go get a new car, but just don't want to have to go through that hassle. But I also don't want to sink money into it when it may be a goner in the 6 months.

From reading old posts here, it sounds like it could be the inverter water pump has failed, which is shutting down the DC/DC battery charging circuit and low voltage is causing all the problems. If it's the inverter pump, $700 sounds high. Pump and coolant cost less than $150, and no special tools are needed to bleed the system.

Anyone have the trouble codes that would spit out for that? That way I can go to my mechanic with some info to compare with? Does it work like that?

It would help if a) you verified which coolant pump, inverter or engine, the mechanic proposes to replace, and b) if you could post the codes the mechanic read. And c) your odometer reading.

I have just finish replacing the engine water pump for my 2005. The total cost for the all the parts was around $110(water pump, 2 coolant, serpentine belt). You can DIY and save some money. I'm no mechanic, just read some of the posting on this site and a few youtube video.

Just did the same as Nixxster did last Saturday although I added a new pulley. There are great resource on PC and Youtube for either pump. S/O to Patrick Wong, Hobbit, LG and others who have graciously contributed over the years for their How-To's. I ended up buying the Lislie Funnel and the Airlift II. My time was worth those expenses but your analysis may differ.

Bottom line I'd replace the pump even if you had to have a dealer do it. $700 is just North of a typical car payment and you'd have to disclose/discount your sales price if left unrepaired.

Just an update - I called the local dealer, they bid it at $520ish but I wasn't able to get it in right away. I took the bid to my local mechanic and he dropped the price to $450. Took a day to get the car back and is running great. Thanks!!
