When I went to the Chevy dealer to check out the new Volt, they had the Trax there and if the Bolt is similar, it should be a popular car.

I always thought that when the bolt finally went into production, it would be purposefully designed as an EV. IF it's a Trax coaster repurposed - well ok.

A 3rd gen Prius is a maximum of 39-40 cubic feet of storage with 21-22 in the hatch area with the seats up. A Prius V is 67 maximum. A Ford CMAX is 53. The Chevy Trax is 48-49 and 18-19 with the seats up. I expect that the Bolt will be similar to the Trax although perhaps a bit less due to a tapered roofline that is more aerodynamic.

No idea. Those numbers are with the seats folded down for all of the cars. I didn't gather the rear cubic ft. area when the seats are upright.

I've read the same stuff, until GM says it I'm not going to believe it. If true this will be a perfect car for my parents, and down the road several years good for my wife and I. Hopefully by then there will be a Model 3 and others to also choose from.

A working prototype for the next BEV after the Spark EV was a Sonic EV. The Trax is built on the same platform as the Sonic. It is basically a crossover version that is a little larger and has an AWD option.

The Trax is a recent new comer to the US, but we've had the Buick version for awhile. If the Trax wasn't here still, I think GM's talking points on the Bolt would be using Sonic instead.

The Sonic is a B-class car; the subcompact class in the US like the Yaris. Using interior volume for the EPA's classification makes the Sonic hatch a mid-size car, though the 2016 model is now in the small wagon category, because of the cargo volume. I'll point out that hatch is taller than longer. Removing the floor to open up underneath cargo space will allow small suitcases to keep under the rear seat tops while standing on their short ends.

The Sonic and Trax interior volumes are near identical, and the exterior measurements are close. The Trax's wheel base and width is slightly larger than the Sonic's. The Sonic can be longer or shorter overall, depending on sedan or hatchback. The big difference is that the Trax is nearly a half foot taller. That gives the higher seating position, and likely space for the AWD system.
2016 Trax Trim Levels: LS - LT - LTZ | Chevrolet
    2016 Sonic Trims: RS - LTZ - LT - LS | Chevrolet

The Spark EV didn't lose any space compared to the ICE model. Compare Side-by-Side It is under 100 mile range, but using the Trax platform, as opposed to the Sonic's, was likely done for that extra space from the taller height for the larger battery pack in the Bolt.

    Is that the Encore?

If so, it has (surprisingly to me) decent rear hatch space that from the outside is very deceptive. Scroll down to see interior pics: 2015 Buick Encore Review By Bill Jackson

looks pretty big. i guess you have to sit in it to get a feel for front and back leg room and comfort.

    That's it.
From the photos, the cargo area has more floor space than the Sonic hatch, but it is also a longer car.
I didn't look at the interior measurements for comparison, but the Sonic front is roomy, and the seats more comfortable than the gen2 Prius and Matrix. I haven't spent much time in the rear, but they didn't feel cramped on a test sit. They probably won't be the best place to be on a long road trip, but that is true of all cars in the size class that can still also hold the luggage.

That's so cute... I might be able to get one of my thunder thighs in it but probably not the other. Doesn't look like people of size will be able to drive it.

As a typically obese American that drives a Sonic everyday, getting into the Bolt won't be a problem.

At 6'-5" 215 the gen1 volt was a contortionist's trick for me to get seated in the rear seats. The Bolt's gotta do better than that to appeal to customers. North Americans aren't just getting heavier - they're getting taller too.

The 3rd gen Prius headroom is 38.6 inches front and 37.6 rear. For what it's worth, the Chevrolet Trax is 39.6 front and 38.8 rear.

saw my first encore yesterday. nice looking, but did look a bit small. still, the coax looks small to me from the outside, but has the same hatch as the prius.

I test drove an Encore. It was ok for the front seats. Back seats you'd have to be a double amputee to fit comfortably if the person in the front seat had the seat all the way back. Which I have to. Unlike my Camry where I can get in the back seat with the front seat all the way back and sit comfortably.
