Need help. I have a 2011 Prius with about 42K miles on it. Today, I went to turn it on but the Check Hybrid System light came on and the car wont turn on. I can only put it in neutral. All the other lights are on as well. I have not had any recent service but the oil change notification did come on in the last few weeks. Also the low tire pressure light turned on yesterday but I didnt get a chance to fill them up. Any ideas before I have it towed as to what the issue can be? Because it has such low mileage I cant think of any major issues it would have.

Sounds like your 12v battery in the hatch is low and needs to be replaced.

Lots of unrelated warning lights and errors is a common symptom.

Like xl said, it sounds like your 12 volt battery is low. I would check that first before having it towed. It would help if you were to add your location to your personal info so it will show up in your avatar.

How can I check the battery if that's the problem? Should I try a reset? I actually had it replaced earlier this year when the car completely died. I bought the car thinking I would be driving long distances on a daily basis but I ended up having to fly around instead. Needless to say, the car spends most of the time pried at the airport hence the low mileage.

Voltage at the battery terminals can be measured with a $5 multimeter (Walmart, etc.).

Sounds like your problem is that the car sits around for long periods and the 12 volt auxiliary battery discharges. Do it frequently, and even a relatively new battery will fail.

you can measure it at the jump point under the hood, instead of crawling in the back and unlocking the hatch manually. of course, if it's dead, you'll have to crawl in the back.

Yes, it does only have one bar of gas. I'll try that first and check oil.

Well, I checked oil and there seems to be some in there. About 3/4 up after the first dot marker. I'll have the give the gas tank and battery check after work today. If its the 12v battery, is it an easy change like a regular car where I can buy one at walmart and connect terminals?

The battery has smaller than normal posts, and it's dimensions too are quite compact. Also, since the battery's techinically in the passenger compartment, it should be AGM type and have the proper vent connection. Simplest route would be likely a dealership. If you have the time, this battery will also do:

    Optima Battery 8171-767 (DS46B24R)

(it's available on Amazon, for example)

So, "walmart" equals you're in North America??

it's a little harder than a regular one under the hood. learn how to test it properly, then cross that bridge if you come to it.

The last time I had a battery issue the car would not start at all and the doors wouldnt even unlock with the key fob. This time, I can still unlock and start to a certain degree. The radio and air work but I cant start the engine. Would this still be a battery problem?

add 4 gallons of gas, put a charger on the 12 volt battery and hope for the best...
I never go below 3 bars on the gas gauge or 350 miles between fill ups
if you have been playing with the car you have run the battery down so it will need to be charged either way.
if you ran the traction battery down below 10% you will have to get it towed to the dealer for a recharge
been there done that cost me almost 250 bucks for running it out of gas and limping it off the highway on the battery

Just noticed this. So what battery is in there now, where did you get it changed, dealership? Original battery is always Yuasa I think.

You really should pick up a digital multimeter, and inexpensive one can be had for around $20. Read up a bit, check your battery's voltage when the car's off. If you check it within a day of driving and it's 12.5 volt or higher you're fine. But yeah, measure it and post the result.

^ ^ ^ What he said. Use a digital volt meter. Check the voltage at the jump post under the hood. Report back with the readings. Ideally you need to check the voltage after the Prius has set overnight and BEFORE it is started up (put in ready mode).

The voltage when it is in "Ready" mode is NOT needed. Just the voltage of the battery while the Prius is OFF.

I too would like to know about the replacement battery mentioned. Is it OEM or aftermarket? What brand, part number, rating, etc. ?
