I was at the dealership today with my 2007 Prius Model 3, 74,000 miles, and my service advisor recommended two items: replacing the hybrid cooling system air filter, and replacing the hybrid cooling system inverter. I decided to do some research before sinking a few hundred bucks into this (especially since an air filter is an easy DIY) and can find nothing about either item. (I'm not even sure this air filter exists.) Does anyone do these things as preventive maintenance?

As you found out, there is no hybrid cooling system air filter. There is a HV Battery cooling fan that can be inspected for dust and dirt buildup. This is a DIY item.

As for the hybrid cooling system, there is a coolant water pump. I suspect that is what the service advisor was referring to. You can look in the coolant reservoir for signs of turbulence to verify the pump is working OK.

You may have misheard the adviser because replacing the Inverter is around $4000. Maybe he meant replacing the Inverter coolant which is very common and there is no Hybrid Air Filter. There's an engine air filter and a cabin filter.

The Inverter coolant replacement is very easy to do and I highly recommend it. Not only does that coolant service the Inverter it also loops thru the transmission also.
Many youtubes on it and lots of posts about it here. I do mine every 30K miles when I change the trans fluid.

Go over to lusciousgarage.com and check out there service schedule. Follow it.

welcome! nothing needs to be done until after 100,000 miles, it's all in your manual.

image.jpeg Thank you, everyone. Here is the report they gave me. What filter might this refer to?

That makes little sense. As mentioned above, there's a vent on the right side of the back seat for cooling air for the hybrid battery, and that can get clogged up if you transport very hairy dogs or similar. Take a look at that. But there's no filter, just a plastic grille, and it's a DIY job.

the gen II didn't have a filter in the battery vent cooling system. maybe the grille looked dirty. if your not the original owner, or you carry pets, it would be a good idea to open it up and check/clean the fan, as mentioned above. you can find great pics and instructions here if you want to diy, or to make sure they do it right. for that price, i'd diy or shop it around.

    What was done for $751.90?

I would go back to that dealer and politely ask for them to show you the "Hybrid" filter and also explain what's involved in "cleaning" the hybrid system. If they say the filter is behind a panel etc that's baloney as we all have had our cars torn apart and know every inch of that system.
There's no filter. There talking about the cabin filter probably. That takes 22 seconds to replace and cost $10.

If they hem & haw and bumble around avoid avoid avoid that dealership. Man I hate dealerships. I don't let them touch my car.
Find a local mechanic and take care of him. 99% of problems with this car are just ordinary automobile maintenance.
The dealer even messes up an oil change. Go check your oil right now I bet its a 1/8 inch over the top fill line on the dipstick. Plus they use vat oil. The worst.

Btw, what the dealership name? Did you google them and check there BBB? Bet there's lots of complaints.

I'm surprised that they didn't try to sell you a service for the flux capacitor. Maybe it was on the first page you didn't post? That would explain the high price!

Ok, thanks for the clarification on the (non-existent) filter. I will have the fan checked (elsewhere). And I will call the dealer and ask about the inverter replacement and whether he meant coolant. As to the high price, I will now give you good reason laugh at me, or tell me I should have shopped it around. The trunk latch was broken - very hard, sometimes impossible to open, and eventually the plastic trim piece on the back of the tailgate broke from pulling on it. They sold me a replacement unit -- latch mechanism and trim piece all in one, for $270 plus $330 installation. FWIW, I did learn to ask questions when they tried to sell me a cabin air filter for 69.99, and I learned I could buy one for $15 and install in 3 minutes (counting the wal from my door to the driveway.). I hate the dealership and only go there when OEM things are involved.

I'm not familiar with second gen, but that looks fishy. "Hybrid air/cooling system and filter" doesn't ring a bell. And not cheap. Hang on to that document.

Maybe ask them to explain in more detail, show you what specifically they're talking about. If it's the cabin filter (behind the glove box) that is a total rip. For starters it might be ok to just vacuum it. And if replacement is warranted it's a trivial 5 minute DIY chore to get to. The overpriced replacement filters are $20~30.

Stuart, either use the hand grip on the inside of the hatch or press on the Toyota logo to close the hatch.

The problem was getting it open, not closing it. Pushing on the rubber-covered release did not disengage the latch until you pushed hard, sometimes not at all. Anyway, works like a dream now.

07's were notoriously bad. patrick wong has a great writeup, and there are a ton of people with bad switches.

Yes I have the same. I went to Home D and got filter media and ringed the inlet duct with double sided tape. Cut a nice square piece of filter and stuck it on. It works good. I got a sheddy doggie.

My fan wasn't bad at all. It never comes on. I oiled the fan bearing after cleaning the fan and it spins much easier. Just take the bearing sticker off the end of the motor and put some electrical motor oil (Lowes) in the bearing hole.
