Do you have the '16 Prius? Does it beep in reverse?

    Hi all...

getting back into this forum after an absence since I'm thinking about buying a Gen4 Prius. Folks here were extremely helpful when I bought by '10 Prius because I would not have bought ANY vehicle that continuously beeps in reverse.

So I'm asking if anyone has taken delivery of a '16 yet, and had the dealership change it to one single beep in reverse. I want to be 100% sure it can be done.

From the manual (see page below), it looks like you can do it yourself but I would ask (tell) them to do it as a condition of sale.

Correction: Column 1 means you can do it by MFD, Column 2 means you can do it if you have Entune and Column 3 means it can be done by dealer. In this case only Column 3 option is shown so for now dealer is the only way to go. Making it a condition of sale is thus important rather than just being easier.

I am under shock they actually still left this useless annoying and irritating inside beeping. Like as if other cars have it or like as if other cars make a special engine noise or have some special lights telling you are in reverse....
We can all thank you can have it turned off (dealer only unfortunately), but you can still do it.

They had to use some kind of audible signal, because the "gear" selector is self centering, so one cannot determine if the car is in reverse or drive by looking at it. Yes, I know you can see the indicator on the dash display. But they felt the need to make it as idiot proof as possible.

The Gen-3 can turn it on or off to a single beep with a miniVCI. We need to find out if miniVCI works with the Gen-4.

Actually, there were some people that forgot that they were in reverse and simply floored it. That's why that beep is there and it's probably not even Toyota's choosing, but law. Same as with seatbelt beep in Gen3.

Can that beeping be heard from outside? I should know this since I've had my '16 for a week now, but curious nonetheless.

^ That'll give you another beep, lol.

My 2 cents: the beep is there for a reason, a patch for the anonymity of the return-to-center shifter. You have to living a sheltered life to get into a lather over something that occurs for 5 or 10 seconds, and may just help you out some distracted day.

I found the continuous beeping distracting and view it as a safety hazard.
It's enough of a challenge figuring out what's hiding behind the rear quarters without anything else making it harder.

BTW, I bought a 'beeping back-up, LED light' on eBay and fitted it on our 2003 Prius. It doesn't have much effect on pedestrians but the volume is right inside and outside.

Although I understand the reason, a single beep is enough. Better still, a quick, double beep, and then turn it off so we can both look and listen.

but only one barely audible 'cheep' when you're gonna run out of gas.

No. Not at all. It beeps every time I start the car. Sometimes for 2-3 weeks :)

The reverse beep does not bother me at all. I what it there for my wife: too risky to take a chance turning it off for her. I'm used to not being distracted by noises (decades of professional flying).

Just try not to "turn off the noises" too much. The old joke: "why did you land with the landing gear up?". Answer: "I was so distracted by the gear up warning horn beeping at me I forgot to put the gear down"
