Looks like a big one next few days:
    • Fill-up Prius tonight and spare gas can
    • Get a 600-1.5 kW 12 V to 120 VAC inverter if you don't have one. (Walmart or AutoZone).
    • Long heavy duty extension cord to reach from Prius to door/window.
If you have inverter, do a sanity test.

    Enjoy the snow days.

    So, Dr. Wilson:

I know you are sort of the professor of all things complicated about the Prius that I do not understand (I've seen some of your other postings on other sites and I seriously mean you are quite well educated on things that baffle me).

Having said that, I live outside Seattle. Not part of this big storm. But, we do have our snow days and this area is honestly not equipped to handle them... a few inches and everyone falls to pieces.

So, from your post above, I think you are talking about turning the Prius into a generator of sorts? Which I have heard before.

I have a 1,000 watt Honda inverter, which I can use during power outages. But, it really does not have the "oomph" to take care of the refrigerator, nor will it run the microwave. At times. we have been without power for three weeks....and no way to leave to get to town (not had to eat the dogs yet, but I keep that as an option). I guess I could say that we also have no water during such emergencies, because we have a well and the well runs off an electric pump...

I do keep around 15 gallons of gasoline in the winter to use in the inverter.

So, can you direct me to a "fool-proof" way to do this....and can you say something wise and sage that will convince my wife to let me do this -- ie -- it will not destroy the Prius?

And, if I misinterpreted your post -- as Emily Litella used to say on Saturday Night Live, Never Mind!

    Correct!
This was my first Prius modification in November 2005 but there are several approaches:
    type wattage typical loads
    1 12 V cigarette lighter 100-110 W laptops and a few lights
2 12 V modified sine wave 1 kW surge 1.5 kW limited distance and test loads
3 12 V sine wave 0.95 kW surge 1.5 kW works all loads but lower efficiency
4 traction battery in-car sine wave 3 kW works all loads
5 traction battery in-house sine wave 3-5 kW needs cables to connect to house

I would recommend using the PriusChat search function and see what folks have posted. The important thing is to look at the potential loads:
    • ~100 W - CFL and LED lights, one TV or one laptop
    • ~1000 W - CFL and LED lights, TV and laptop, and (heater fan or fridge)
    • ~3000 W - a happy home
Now there are different inverter output, AC signals:
    • square wave - UGH!! Works for resistance loads but death to electronics and no extension length.
    • modified sine wave - needs to be tested as some devices are sensitive but most work. The problem is the voltage falls off fast the longer the extension cord.
    • sine wave - as good as it gets.

Right, move the grill closer to the house and check the propane or charcoal supply.

exactly. keep your shoveling distances as short as possible. i keep the firewood just far enough away that the termites can't fly.

Bisco you may be underestimating termites' flying abilities. Though I really dont know how they are in Boston.

For the affected areas, snow forecast is high. Presumably y'all know what to do, and that nobody from this group will carbon monoxide themselves out of existence. Don't park your car in a place that a snowplow will want to go.

Locate your 'global warming' books so you can pose them later in snowbanks :)

    I got a smallish inverter recently 400w.
Unlike Bisco we've already seen Caberet so we're gonna watch Star Wars again
Got a BB-8 droid from Target for 80 portions ..we'll make it I am sure

    You may regret this:
    • 34.6528N 86.57157W, planet Earth, Sol solar system, Milky Way galaxy
    • . . .
We're on the Southern end of the storm with just a 'wintery mix.' At 3 AM, 33 F with local radar show very light drizzle/rain. Freezing rain forecast but nothing evident, yet.

I would still rather use my purpose built generator. Works for all power outages, can and has run the whole house since before Prius. To each their own.

    @bwilson4web

I wasn't expecting a resume, just wondering roughly where snow's in the forecast, lol.

But those coordinates'll do; I'll enter them on the drone tomorrow.

My parents dragged me along to Unitarian do's for a while.

@bwilson4web Checked your coordinates, and yup: near Huntsville AL.

When I saw your location being Huntsville Alabama I jumped to the erroneous conclusion: well he can't be getting snow there, must be somewhere more Northern at present. Strange, climate seems more a west/east thing these days. Sometimes I wonder why I even bother with snow tires, on the wet coast. :)

The current storm left a light dusting on the hand rails of our porch ramp. But the temperatures on Wednesday never got below freezing so it was gone at sunrise. The next one is supposed to be the biggie.
