Help! Intake Manifold Removal

    I'm ready to remove my intake manifold (IM) to clean the EGR port on the side and also the little holes inside the IM. However, I do not see how to release the fastener on the top of the IM that holds that big wiring bundle in the center over the IM. (I have everything else accomplished) If you have done this before, I'd greatly appreciate a little help out here in left field. Thanks!

    OP: are you talking about the wire bundle that is clipped on a bolt? i think i pulled it, but my memory is fuzzy.

    Yep. Only its one of those push in clips for the big wire bundle in the center going over the top of the IM. It's big. You can't miss it Can't see a way to release it without cutting.

    Guess I'll jump in. This?:

    Not much detail in Repair Manual, just an indication that there's something there. Pull straight up? See if you can get a side view with a mirror, figure out how it works?

    See where the yellow paint goes across the seam, in the pic above? I bet if you put a screw driver in there and gently pry, it'll pop up.

    Underneath my finger where that yellow paint mark is located (on the other side) is one of those push in things. I don't want to pry it as it looks like it will be destroyed. Not sure how a Toyota tech would get this baby loose, though

    Usually you need to push in the tang. It can take an extreme effort and you need 3 hands in order to yoink on it at the same time. A pair of long needle nose pliers with bent tip sometimes helps.

    I wonder if that little circular cap on the top is part of the puzzle.

    I need to do this on mine. I know these IMs don't use a standard paper gasket, but have the rubber insert thingy that seals it to the block. If I pull the IM, do I need to replace it or is it reusable?

    I believe the IM gasket and also the EGR gasket are some kind of silicon and are re-usable. However, I bought new ones just to make sure.

    Thanks, Mendel. I believe the IM is 21 ft lbs and the TB is 14?
    On another note, I see that I have a pool of oil in the bottom of the TB and believe that is normal for an Atkinson engine.

    I think you're right for the intake manifold, but I see 7 ft/lb for the throttle body hold down bolts. I'll attach the relevant sections for both. :)

    Here's a couple of pics of my effort. By the way, at 130,000 mi, the EGR tube and small ports within the intake were in pretty good shape. 10% of the EGR pipe was filled with gunk.
