Having bought 4 Prius cars, I was looking forward to buying the 4G Prius. That is, until I saw the pricing.

I am safety conscious and wanted the Toyota Safety Sense package that included blind spot monitoring, accident avoidance, radar cruise control, etc. I was holding out for a Three with the Toyota Safety Sense added on. I could not find one online, so my only option as others have noted was to go to a Prius 4 for $30K--more than I wanted to spend.

I opted out for a 2016 Honda Civic Touring model. This (like Toyota) is the Civic's top-of-the line model with Honda's safety package included. I tried to get the package on a lower trim line, but no such luck.

The bottom line was that the Civic was $3000 less than the Prius. I have most of the same technology features, but am not getting the great Prius MPG rating. The Honda's MPG averages 35 with a highway of 41. Not bad for a gas-only engine.

For what I am saving, I can afford the lower MPG and still be ahead.

Just got my 70+ today...high 40s - low 50 F, with a mix of freeway and street miles...this was the first half and of the trip and the average was almost 70. By way of comparison, my Gen2 wouldn't have done more than 45 in these conditions (plenty of hills out here in Portland, OR. Interestingly enough, my total average is still in the low 50s because the initial average was somewhat low (maybe getting used to the car / breaking in etc.), but my shorter round trips have always been pretty close to ~60 recently. I don't remember the conditions for the 52 mph run, but I think it was in bad traffic (lots of stop and go on hilly terrain), which doesn't help mileage. I think the main factor in getting easily to 60+ without too much effort is distances that exceed 15+ miles, but I haven't done much experimentation with it.

It seems that with 17" 18 inch sport rims and wheels the 2016 prius will look very very nice indeed. I dont like it on stock i need to see this car live

4 touring. Big improvement over gen 3, but sun reflection off nav screen are really bad. It needs to be covered to drive safely

So, are you a Prius 4 buyer? Or are you mistakenly in this thread?

Although if it was really about money, you could've talked them down $1500 to lessen the difference :) But people generally don't buy hybrids to save money, some people do though, lots of true road warriors out there but I'm not sure that is representative of the hybrid buyer.

That was easier said than done. When I visited Toyota dealers in early Jan. most had very few 2016 Prius models in stock. When I asked about the price I was told that they were all going for MSRP. So much for negotiations.

I probably could have waited 2-3 more months when more models were in stock and then possibly had received a good deal, but I did not want to wait that long.

Well I didn't even think it was available in early January, I was just thinking if you were buying in the past few weeks, you could've negotiated. I mean someone just showed one in NC that was $4k off of MSRP which is a bit insane but people who have bought in the past few weeks have reported being able to talk down $1500 or so.

No, that doesn't sound right; probably more like THEY don't have one on the lot right now. Saw this on my first try at cars.com:

Then I'm puzzled. I can't seem to configure the car on the Toyota website and different dealers argue that different combinations of things are not allowed. How the hell is a body supposed to buy a car this way? Frustrating. The Toyota website disallows selction of the PCP if Blue paint is selected. Just no way to configure the damn thing.

Maybe this whole deal is some kind of Japanese thing? Years ago I got myself a spiffy new Datsun 2000. Just before it was shipped to the US the name was changed from "Lovely Lady" or some silly thing. The Japanese don't seem to get us over here.

Availability in different regions is different. Try entering a different zip code on the Toyota website, maybe California?
If you want a car not available in your region, you may have to travel to get it.

Configuration of the car is based on available, or expected, inventory in your region. For instance, I can build a Blue/Beige Four with ATP in Northern California. Toyota shows that there are 3 such cars available in the area. But If I try to build the same car in Southern California, there are no Blue/Beige cars, with or without ATP, available. And that matches what an inventory search shows. If I'm willing to get a grey, or black interior, then I can get ATP+PCP, of which they have 1 of each. Or 2 Blue/black with no options.

When they say certain options aren't allowed what they really mean is "our region isn't getting the options you want." There are no ATP+PCP combos in Northern California, but plenty down in Southern California, for example.

Thanks a ton for the tip. :) I called and left a message for my Toyota guy, I'm gonna head in tonight and ask them about it. If not... well, what better way to break in a new car than to drive it back home? ;) I really want the adaptive cruise control, moon roof is just gravy. I might need to work on this some more; thanks a ton!

I bought a 4, with sunroof, atp and pcp. Black exterior, black interior.

I couldn't find what I wanted on the web.

I went to the dealer, and the sales guy found one, it was on a boat, 3 days out of Japan !

It took under a month to go across the pacific, though the canal and up the east coast.
The sales guy called me every time he spotted a new location on it's progress.

First time I've ever bought a car on a boat !
