MPGe is the perfect tool, for what it is designed.
For advertising, it is rather week.
For comparing energy content, it is perfect.
For comparing CO2 emissions, it is pointless.

Blame focus groups for MPGe. They preferred it over kW/mile.

kWh/mile doesn't do the job though.

Remember, the main purpose was to create a measuring unit used to compare electric and gas cars.
Everyone already knows, and understands mpg. If you gave kWh/mile you would also have to provide the conversion rate and then multiply by the average fuel efficiency.

    Far too complicated and unwieldy.

agreed, cost by state is better than country. but what is it useful for? not for purchasing. the best thing for that would be a comparison of energy use per vehicle on the monroney sticker, like you see on appliances.

I would suggest it is a good answer to the people that assume your electric bill will go up as much as your gas bill goes down.
I still run into a lot of people at events that think exactly that. Some assume their electric bill will go up more than their gas bill goes down.

While true in some areas, or for some individuals with the low gas prices, this tool allows people to see, in a general way, if that is true in their state.

agreed. that's why a local one would be even better. i wonder if there is anything by electric company. you know, local rate area.

That would be even better. Although, best yet would be to have an option for gas fuel efficiencies.
In other words, to go 100 miles in a 20,30,40,50 mpg car costs w,x,y,z dollars.
100 miles in the electrics costs ...

For car buyers, that level of detail would probably be very helpful.
For helping people understand the general concept in their state, what they have should work well.

i like that. we need something on the car, or in the dealership to educate people.
