Anyone have any information regarding crash tests for the 2016 Prius. I've searched the net, including the IIHS, JNCAP, Euro NCAP, ANCAP sites with negative results...seems odd for a car already on sale in some markets.

I did come across a video from Japan showing the aftermath of a 2016 Prius involved in a head on collision. I don't know the details, but the Prius seems to have faired much better than the other vehicle.

I couldn't find anything about when new model year vehicles get tested. I be shocked if less than acceptable on the IIHS, but lets see the data.

It generally takes about 3 months for the US NCAP and IIHS to get numbers... so we should know by spring

Then in about 6 months, they'll announce their new standard with a press release pointing out Toyota fails their new crash test.

I'm pretty sure it has already been tested, certainly by Toyota, if not yet confirmed by the insurance agency. It usually takes some time for that data to get onto the net.

In the meantime, just to be certain, can someone test the airbags just to make sure they inflate properly?

    ;)

We'll have to wait until some brand new piece of junk rams a 2016.

If it wouldn't allready have been tested it wouldn't be allowed to be on sale !

I am confident the Insurance Institute for Highway Sasfety cannot prevent cars from being sold, they can just raise the cost of insuring them.

The New Car Assessment Program has this mandate: NHTSA’s Office of Vehicle Safety Research’s mission is to strategize, plan, and implement research programs to continually further the Agency’s goals in reduction of crashes, fatalities, and injuries. Our research is prioritized based on potential for crash/fatality/injury reductions and is aligned with Congressional Mandates, DOT & NHTSA goals. So again I doubt they are required to crash test before sales.

Maybe that's how it is in the US,but in Germany no car will be let on the roads until proven safe .
I remember the first cars from that Chinese company HYD or whatever it's called .
Their cars totally failed in the crash test and would have never been allowed on german roads !
Even we as owners must prove our car is safe to stay on the road every 2 years .
Only exception is when the car is totally new,in that case it is checked after 3 years, but after that every 2 years .

Ditto for Canada. They have to be tested. Not by the insurance guys, by the manufacturer to DOT standards. The insurance guys test to determine the insurance costs to charge. Cost of repair thing.
I'm pretty sure the same applies to the US.

Appears to have performed well, as expected. Hope they release the video soon.

I hope the 2016 Prius isn't one of those cars that the automaker rebuilds after half a year to fix the structural problems shown with the crash tests. (like the 2014.5 Camry). I think it's really messed up how automakers do that with their cars because some people then have to drive the more unsafe version of the car. I expect it will do well though!

well I am thinking when the new small overlap crash test came out, there was a catch-up preiod. Now there is no excuse.

Interesting. This has been one of my favorite topics for most of my adult and child life. Been checking the IIHS site almost daily for a couple months now for this. Seems like some insurance company attended a live crash event for that car and posted an early sneak peak. From what I can tell from years of analyzing these types of crash (for fun) is that the car did extremely well.

The wheel broke away on purpose so it doesn't shove its way into the lower hinge pillar. Looks like it was hanging on a thread when it flung itself into the lower door (you can see where the wheel pushed it up) very good wheel control.

I'd guestimate 2cm upper hinge pillar rearward movement and 4cm for the lower hinge pillar.

Interested in how the car moves in the video.

As some of you know, I revealed that Toyota band-aided the 3rd gen prius on the drivers side only. Sucks but better than nothing..

also you can see the toyota engineers in the background which probably flew in from japan.

Here's another pic. Note the wheel piece on the ground. Very good breakaway of the wheel. I can tell its a very well thought out design by the way the wheel split and axle broke off.

I also like the position of the car relative to the (not in frame) 300,000 lb concrete barrier. The car took full impact rather than how some cars simply push off to the side like the band-aided 3rd gen prius.

It did a great job from what i can see in pics.

Any idea of how the dummy looked and where the impacts were?
