2007 (2nd Gen) Engine lights, limp mode, and battery cooling fan

    My 2007 (2nd Gen) Prius' battery cooling fan is always on. The gas engine never shuts off. The array of warning lights include the red triangle, check engine, VSC and ( ! ) lights in addition to the car with the exclamation on the MFD.

    I tried resetting the error codes by disconnecting the 12v battery for a minute. When the error codes were gone, I started the car, drove for 10 miles, and it drove smoothly, seemed to charge the battery just fine, showed good gas mileage, and the gas engine turned on at normal times. After I returned home and turned the car on a second time, the warning lights came back on.

    I've gone to both O'Reilly and Autozone, both of which were not able to product error codes (They don't have TechStream). The car started going into Limp Mode 2 weeks ago intermittently (usually only after 5-10 minutes of idling in a drive-thru or parking lot), and now it goes into limp mode every few miles while driving.

    All of this started because I drove off of a curb with one tire (it was a gradual grade shift on a street curve that went from asphalt to asphalt curb). As soon as that happened, the triangle came on and the problems started the next time I started the car. What is wrong with this Prius?

    If there are warning lights on, there are DTC codes stored. Get them read and you'll know the problem

    I'd like to do that, but the only place in my town that can read them is the Toyota dealership, and they want to gouge me for 200 dollars just to read the codes. I'm trying to save money to get this fixed, and that will put me back a lot.

    Reading the symptoms you have, I would guess you have a failing hybrid battery.

    Dash lit up like a Xmas tree, hearing battery fan in back, engine always running, & NO power/limp mode, are the classic signs & symptoms of a failed HV Battery.

    You could shop around independent Toyota mechanics to see how much they charge to get the codes read. If they don't have the proper equipment to read the codes, you shouldn't have to pay for services not rendered.

    OR, since all signs point to failed HV Battery, just get a new HV Battery.

    Isn't an OBD2 code scanner able to read a P0A80? My cheap, simple code scanner read the P0A93 code when the HV
    inverter electric pump failed in my Gen 2 so it stands to reason that my code scanner should be able to read the P0A80
    if and when it the HV battery dies while I still own it.

    If you are unable to spend $200 then you'll need to invest some time.
    Do you have an Android phone?
    If so buy a Bluetooth OBDII dongle, and the Torque app.
    Then use it to scan your car.

    It does stand to reason; however, auto-parts store and the generic code readers (stand-alone devices) don't seem to reliably do it.

    I have 4 non-dealer options for reliable code reading in my sig.

    Hey, I have the same exact symptoms with my car. Currently. I have a 2008. All the lights came on and puts me in limp mode after 10 mi. I took it to the dealership and they charged me $160 and they found code p0 101 and p0171. I changed the maf sensor, disconnected and reinstalled the air filter box as they suggested. It's still running the same.lean apparently. I've been able to get back and forth to work two days now but it's getting worse and I don't want to ruin my car.uggh

    So, what are you capable of doing? (as far as diagnosing this problem).

    P0101 is set when the ECM sees a reading from the MAF sensor that's way off from what it expects - based on RPM and throttle opening. Since the MAF is one of the main sensors used to determine the amount of fuel injected, a problem there can/will cause a fuel trim code like P0171.

    Maybe the wiring to the MAF is faulty. Maybe something (like a bad vacuum leak) is causing the MAF the report incorrectly.

    If you want to figure this out, you need some kind of scantool that can display ECM data (such as RPM, MAF, short term and long term fuel trims, etc), as well as codes, and freezeframe data. That's a "snapshot" of engine operating conditions from the (almost) moment when the code set.

    That kind of data can help point you in a direction to figure out the cause of your problem.

    Here's a thread that reviews several scantool apps and devices (plus you might need a decent digital multimeter to check voltages on the wiring).
