We were broadsided on the passenger side by a 2016 Honda HR-V crossover this morning. Side curtain air bags deployed properly and both my wife and high school daughter were protected by them. No one was hurt although my wife's ears were ringing for about 10 minutes. The car is totalled but no one was hurt. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Prius after the way this one held up in the accident.

It happened 90 miles from home. AAA gave my wife a ride to Hertz for a rental to get home.

The fun of dealing with insurance companies and looking for a replacement car begins next week. This is really a bummer because the the new battery pack, Michelin Energy Savers and new rims only had about 7,000 miles on them.

Yeah, would definitely buy the car back just to get the battery pack out to sell. That's the one thing I'm scared of since I replaced my battery: having the car totaled in an accident.

Any time you can walk away from an accident - thank the man upstairs and count your blessings.

I was very happy how my 09 protected me when a semi ran a red light. It is always better to lose metal than flesh.

We just bought an '06 for our teenage son and one of the deciding factors for buying was safety/crash worthiness. (y)

Having just recently also totaled our 05, high fives to you and your family. Replacing it is proving much more difficult. The salvage value of ours with 180k miles was around $500. You would money ahead to retrieve your HV battery and reselling it. Then you will still have your new rims and tires and may be able to sell the rest for your salvage value.

    Thank you, everyone.

An update: We settled over the weekend with the insurance company for $7,000. We're going to put that with half of our tax return when it arrives and look for a good replacement, hopefully another Prius.

If I knew how to take the battery out of it I would have since the insurance company even offered to let me take the battery out of it as long as I replaced it with an old one. Instead, between the battery, touch screen and wheels we settled on a little extra value for the car. All in all, we're very satisfied with the treatment we've received from the insurance company.

Now, the search for another used Prius begins....

Well, that was quick! It looks like we're going to remain a Gen 2 family for the time being. A trusted small dealer that we and other family members have purchased from in the past got his hands on a beautiful 2008 red touring model with bisque leather seats. 101,000 miles and traded in for a new one. Service records every 5,000 miles, mostly by Toyota dealers. Even the first aid kit is still in the original plastic wrapper!

We got the check from the insurance company today and test drove the car tonight. The dealer's going to replace a headlight and we'll pick the car up Saturday.

Picked up the car this morning and put almost 300 miles on it today, including 110 miles each way to our son's house to have dinner with them.
We love the "new" car. The suspension and handling of this touring model is a great improvement over the base model we had. Right now the screen is showing 47.4 mpg with most of that being 65-70 mph. I'll probably fill it up tomorrow just to see how far off the screen is from the mpg number calculated at the pump.

Still a few things to do in the next week or so. I'm planning on ordering one of the sun hoods for the MFD and swapping the license plate frames for something more practical. Narrow black metal one in front with a clear flat plastic cover to protect it from bugs and dents as well as a red reflective frame on the rear. The car has some Cooper tires that are pretty well worn out and very noisy; we'll replace them with some LRR tires. Right now we're leaning toward the Michelin Premier A/S as we'll be traveling coast to coast the next few summers and can use the all weather peace of mind they offer.

As long as it has the package with side and side curtain airbags! (They were only made standard in 2007)

Congrats! Glad everyone was safe and the inconvenience was minimised. The Touring model will have larger 195/55R16 (vs. 185/65R15 on your 2006). That wheel cover is also removable (gun metal alloys are underneath) if you're curious.

Thanks. I put the license plate frames on yesterday and we ordered Pirelli Cinturato P7 A/S Plus tires today. The tires will be installed next week when they arrive. The $60 rebate on the Pirellis will just about cover the navigation screen visor and rear bumper protector we're ordering from the Priuschat Shop tonight or tomorrow.
