I am in the same circumstance with my 04 Prius and have been pondering my options for several weeks. Luckily I have an even older truck I can drive for now.

Dorman Products has a decent video on removing the HV battery from the car. My battery is now sitting on a table in a garage. A good friend who is a Master Electrician and has knowledge of batteries said he would not attempt the removal of the batttery without the reccommended 1,000 volt gloves.

The options are numerous. Dorman, Falconhybrid, and many local varities of offerings at a variety of price points. Some are definite ripoffs. Check around. The Falcon $1,350 was interesting.

If I had a problem free 2008 Pri with 120,00 miles on it I would purchase a new from Toyota battery and not look back. But,

After 2 weeks of pondering (which is very painful, btw) I share this thought:
Is a 12 year old Prius with 265,000 miles on the odometer, peeling paint, a partially functioning radio, needing work on the brakes and some other overdue maintenance worth the price of
a new Toyata battery - $2,300.00 more or less if I do the work myself
a "rehabilated Battery pack" from a reputable source - $950 to $1,350 ish
$170 to $250 for a backyard mechanic to replace bad module(s)
$650 and a 6 month warranty for a higher end backyard mechanic to match up modules, but he comes to me
buying the necessary equipment, follow the excellent knowledge base here on priuschat and rehab my 12 year old battery myself
or various other offers. This is all in the Washington, D.C. area. YMMV in other parts of the country.

Yes, I am also trying to see if there are people on PriusChat who leaves in San Diego that are interested to get together to fix this problem, share the tools and knowledge, hopefully make some cool videos as well.

Well, your situation sounds like the best way is to find out the bad cell and replace them from eBay, see how long it will last, I assume at least 6 month if another one goes out, then you might have to do it again. I am sure the second time you get a lot better at it, if you have a second vehicle, doing this until too many cells are out seems to be the reasonable approach, what you think.

I'd watch videos on youtube thoroughly and get a good understanding. I recently replaced my 12v(it was the original from 11 years ago), and purchased a new Hybrid battery on my 06 with 250k. But I have 3 Priuses, so the cost of the battery was a non-issue. One of my other's will fail in due time and i'll just throw the new one in that one. For some of you guys with 1 prius, might be better off selling and getting a newer used prius.

Also, how many miles did you guys have on your cars when it went?

Mine is 117777, I just bought a 2010 Jetta TDI Manual, it is so much nicer to drive than the Prius, my parents are coming to visit for a few month so they will need a car, I want to fix it and know the issue myself and when it is time, sell the Prius, will see how VW handles the emission problem, I prefer TDI so much better.

After reading more threads and getting more opinions, i am slowly purchasing more and more tools to get the job prepared, hopeful will also find some people in San Diego who would also want to do something similar, the high voltage gloves are on the way and can't wait to get it started. :)
