Have never actually purchased a genuine "from the dealer" Toyota filter. Just did -- because I had a 15 percent off coupon and it put it in-line with the usual NAPA/CarQuest filters that I normally buy.

I got it home and opened it. It had oily "Saran Wrap" pasted across the bottom of the filter -- the part that would mate against the car.

Is this normal. For some reason, I am a cynical type and am thinking I got some sort of used/second filter????

I would take it back to them and ask if that's normal. If they say yes, have them open another box and verify. Sounds strange to me.

Yes. The O-ring is lubricated. I supplement that w/ engine oil since I will partially fill the new filter w/ oil prior to installation.

Well, if Mr. Wong says the wrap is usual, I am happy!

Again, I have never paid for a real Toyota filter before and the "scotch-taped" gasket/washer on top of the box was strange enough, but then to bring it home and have the oily wrap...I have always, of course, run an oily finger on the gasket of new filters before install, but did not realize that Toyota pre-lubed the beasts.

I have a Fumoto valve, so I do not need the gasket/washer. And, of course, pre-lube of the filter gasket is no big deal, but considering the price Toyota charges and what NAPA/CarQuest want, I am thinking I will just collect the 15 percent off coupons and keep buying from Toyota.
