2016 prius in Canada

I'm not sure what Toyota was thinking when I read that on their site as I priced one up. I'm in Newfoundland and not even close to a place where I could get one. I was looking at the touring.

Sorry I don't understand. Can you not just order one to your liking and wait to be delivered? It might take some time, side, 2-3 months, but then you have it exactly as you wish.
Is it not possible to have cars built to order there?

 

Could be possible, but would cost? Maybe Toyota will revise this, depending on demand.

 

Any dealer wanting the business can swap a car with another dealer in the three cites that can get the tech or touring package. I was told by two dealers (well, salesmen) that they can do that. Some might want to charge for extra shipping when doing that, but I was not charged extra when I bought Pearl S, which came from Courtney Toyota. I suspect there is a lot of room in the shipping charges to allow for this kind of thing.

And no, you can't order what you want and wait for it. I -suspect- there is limited availability for Toyota Canada to import those two models - a "quota system" perhaps. Of course the dealers swapping would make that mostly a "moot point".

Perhaps this limitation will end in a few months.

I'm pretty sure if you wave money at the dealer you will get what you want, eventually.

Is Toyota the importer?

We have a similar situation in Australia with Suzuki (and some other brands in the past), where different importers looked after different states. There were slight variations in product, but in some cases appreciable variations to pricing. But if Toyota is the importer in both cases, it's hard to understand.

 

AFAIK it's one entity, "Toyota Canada", country wide.

 

It's more complicated than the Toyota advertising implies. Toyota is allowing Toronto area dealers to order the Touring and Technology models. I'm not sure how big the Toronto area is but it does include Newmarket and Brampton but not Orangeville. Thankfully our local dealer is working with another dealer so I was able to order a Technology with the advanced package.

 

That all sounds like quite a different way to order and buy cars you have there in Canada.
In EU, you have a list of base trims, options, you go to the dealer, which might or might not at all have what you want, and then you order what you want *exactly* and then you wait x number of weeks/months and you get it how you want it. Delivery costs are more or less the same in the same country (e.g. Germany), around 800€ for the Prius (including registration, taxes, license plate).
To my knowledge no dealer swaps anything with any other dealer.

 

That's basically how it normally works here too. I'm guessing that the supply of Touring and Technology trim levels is constrained so they are trying to control demand. I'm assuming that this restriction will go away in the future.
