    News from The Associated Press

Strong quake hits southern Japan, tsunami advisory.

This follows several earlier 6.x shocks.

7.1 is strong, but as the quake in 2011 showed, they are well suited for far worse. Quakes are literally a daily thing. A fact of life. When you visit, you end up feeling a quake almost for sure. And I'd rather be in Japan when a quake hits than anywhere else in the world. They know quakes and how to deal with them.

I have just read more news about it and I am really sorry to read there have been deaths and people lost their homes. I am surprised to be honest that so much damage has been brought with it.

Ordered mine yesterday. looks like no Prius plants affected.

But on a better note. Love the people of Japan. What a great country.

Heightened Earthquake Alert Issued for Southern California

    Bloomberg.com / AP
    Oct. 1st

Santa Ana, Calif. (AP) -- Southern California residents should remain on heightened alertuntil Tuesday for the increased possibility of a major earthquake, officials said.

Gov. Jerry Brown on Thursday signed legislation to develop a statewide warning system to inform Californians of impending earthquakes through their cellphones, radios and other devices.

The warning by the Governor's Office of Emergency Services follows a series of 142 small temblors deep under the Salton Sea, which is located on the 800-mile-long San Andreas fault, the Orange County Register reported Saturday.

I have been doing some reading up on what will probably happen if the big quake does hit in the Salton Sea area. Pretty scary. Not so much for the Salton Sea area, but all the way to Los Angeles, where they predict the ground will shake for about a minute....doesn't sound too long, unless you are in it.

I have been in one 7.3 and one 7.2 quake as well as around a half-dozen 6 to 6.8 quakes. I don't know how "long" any of them lasted, but none approached a minute, that I recall, anyway. But memory is imperfect.

Found this cheery headline from the 1964 earthquake:

Not only will a quake be bad, but the fires that will follow as well as disruption of water supplies to most of the major cities will be a really disaster -- most of Southern California water comes from manmade canals that run right across the fault lines in many locations.

The earth quake is bad enough, and then afterwards as you said, probably no water, electricity, phone service, and very little emergency response for a few weeks. Then you got the looters, rioters, thieves, thugs, assaults, robberies... I'm stocking up on bottled water, canned tuna, batteries, and AMMO.

Better yet, I'll move to the beautiful islands of Bora-Bora, and take my chances with the cyclones and typhoons.

Yes, there's east & west of the fault. And north & south. But I think the South will be goneā€¦ Thats your best bet for an "oceanfront view."

i remember watching the world series in '89, when the bay area quake hit, that was terrifying from 3,000 miles away.
