Third Party Carplay Devices

    I'm considering upgrading my 2012 Prius v nav unit to one of the third party Carplay devices like the Pioneer AVIC-6200NEX. The price seems OK, especially when you consider the exorbitant amount Toyota charges for map updates.

    Has anyone done this yet? If so, how well does it work and was it easy to install. Also, what features did you lose in the process; e.g., backup camera, parking assist, steering wheel controls, etc.

    I'm not too concerned about map updates, there aren't that many changes around here and the DVDs are available on eBay for not too much. May get one in a year or two.

    I'm mostly concerned about a lack of confidence in Toyota to update Entune, and how far they can take the hardware. It's already starting to look a bit primitive compared to the options out there.

    I'm torn between an Android-based front end and CarPlay; I played with Carplay in a rental car and it was nice, and being able to keep all of my media on the iPhone instead of keeping a library in the car and one on my phone would be nice. But the Android front ends are getting cheap.

    Except the v doesn't use a DVD to update in the base NAV system.
