I finally replaced my scraped-up wheel with a wheel I bought from a wrecked Prius. I took it to a wheel shop and the buy put my tire onto the new wheel and balanced it. I kept the TPMS sensor that was already on the wheel, and figured I could use Techstream to register it when I got home.

It never occurred to me that I had to write down the serial number that was on the TPMS sensor before mounting the tire onto the rim.... So now I have a TMPS warning light on my dash and I can't make it go away. Is there any way I can get the sensor to register without taking the tire off the rim and reading the sensor's ID number?

You can use Techstream to blank out the tire and turn out the light. But unless you can get the code from the wrecked Prius, AFAIK you gotta deflate and read. do not know if a Denso code setter can read the code, but Techstream you need to feed it the code.

I entered an all-zero code in Techstream, but the light still comes on

I had a sensor I didn't know the ID of so I went to a local tire store and they had a tool that could read the ID and display it without having to dismount the tire. You could call some in your area and see if they have such a tool and would be willing to take 5 minutes to use it on your new sensor.

I know nothing about tire sensors, so I'm curious, why would you have to reregister an existing sensor? All you did was move it from one wheel to another wheel and put it back on the car. How does the car know it was moved to a different wheel?

Just to follow this thought, it would be really funny if the problem was actually low tire pressure. :ROFLMAO:

The wheel I bought already had a sensor on it, so I didn't think I'd need to pull the old sensor off and put it on the new wheel.

Swapping the old sensor in should resolve this then. You can test this by putting the old wheel with sensor in the hatch for a while, the light should go off. Just make sure the tire's got pressure.

You do have the old wheel and sensor?

It may be. But Techstream reported 1 PSI pressure, and it can't be that low

Sorry, I misread your statement thinking you were talking about the original wheel, so I get it now. I'm surprised the installer didn't suggest keeping the original sensor or ask if you needed the serial number for the replacement, I would have.

Did you see my thread on Managing TPMS with Techstream over on Gen2 Maintenance? I tried Code 0000000 and that seemed to turn light off for about 2 weeks, then it came on again. I assume another sensor went bad on me (old), but I will check. The other "cheat" approach might be to give it the code of a working sensor.

How do you know which tire to reset the code?
Unless you know which tire, AFAIK you have to go around and reduce pressure and watch the screen to see which tire is which. It does take a few minutes for the data to update and the Techstream does not show immediate reaction to pressure changes and code changing. Data needs to refresh.

As far as theory, I did read there is some privacy concern with TPMS as in theory a roadside reader could track vehicles. That implies the ID code is transmitted.

I'd just live with the light; that's taking cargo cult to new heights.

That's one approach but I am trying to play with it with Techstream just to see what hacks are possible. Also I am curious to see how long each sensors last.

I tried the seven zero's trick. No luck.
Three of the sensors read about 40 psi and one reads 1 psi. That's the unregistered one. Techstream lists the registered numbers, and I compare it with the number on the sensor from the wheel I swapped out.

I'll just go back to the tire shop and have him scan the code or swap put the module.

OK...if that battery is TMPS dead I think you get NA reading...so the implication is the old TPMS still reading. I was also wondering if there is some way to pressure up the old TPMS to fake out the reading.

I know what I need to do. I was just hoping I could do this with TechStream

You will have to pull that SOB serial number out from that wheel, there's no other way lol... sorry that this happened. I think you can go back to the tire shop and have the guy deflate the tire and squeeze the tire down for you to write the serial number down.

I am sorry the "zero" technique did not work ...I will try to get on Techstream soon to try it again on my Gen2 to see what is going on.

No worries. I'd assumed that I could just start Techstream and tell it to register the new sensor. I'll get it squared away...
