Our 2006 Prius with 108k miles on it had the red triangle dash lights came on, looks like we need a new Hybrid battery. Battery fan started running all the time. We have already replaced the 12v battery and the car starts fine. Went to the dealer and paid $60 to get hooked up to find out the codes. I have a diagnostic report I will attach, but it is a copy, so the headings are blacked out. Can anyone decipher the codes for me?

Hybrid control: yes p3000, no p3102.
Engine and ECT com 34709000 yes
hv battery: no p0a7f, yes p0a80, yes p3019,
    abs/vsc/trac: no c1259, yes c1310.

We were told we need a battery, G951047031 filter, 5 hours labor, $2588.67 and $50 for the filter? The total is 3389.76 includes tax.

After reading here, we contacted Toyota Corporate and asked about what they called "out of warranty assistance." We have a case number and gave it to the service manager. We told corporate that this is our third Prius and want to keep it running. We have had service done on one of the other Prius at this dealer for all the underwarranty maintenance.

The dealer and corporate are deciding what they are going to agree upon. Any advice at this point?

wait and see what they agree upon. My guess would be they will give you 50% off

Assuming "yes" = you have the code, "no" = you don't.

Those codes are posted all over the place here - available by simply typing the code into the search bar, but I'll let you be lazy:

    P3000 = HV battery malfunction
    P0A80 = Replace Hybrid Battery
P3019 = Block 9 becomes weak - one of two modules in your battery pack likely as a failed or failing cell rendering the pack useless to the car.
C1310 = common secondary code because of HV battery related to regenerative braking.

You're 2+ years out and 8K miles over your warranty. Good luck.

If you're the original owner, and you've always had it serviced at that dealership - emphasize that. Continue to emphasize your Toyota brand and Prius model loyalty.

I recently "helped" an associate get a new battery for $1440 under a goodwill discount. 4 months out of warranty and 10K under the limit - original owner with it serviced at the same dealer. The dealer pretty much told him he was SOL (guy was a jackass), but I gave him the corporate number and it ended up working out for him.

Thanks to everyone here for the help and information you provide. We got a call from Toyota corporate that the price would be half of the original quote. We will pay $1694. Pretty good savings considering we are 2 years out of warranty.

Can anyone tell me what the filter is that costs $50? Is there a filter for the battery fan.

Congrats!!! I don't know what the filter would be. You can ask them what that is before you agree to pay for it. There is no filter that I'm aware of that goes with the HV battery.

If Toyota corporate steps in, the repair "should be" calculated at a reduced rate than what you were quoted. That was a retail quote you got.....now it should be a "warranty" quote. The labor rates are different on warranty quotes for the same repair. You should clarify what the 50% will be. Don't offer the $1694

There is supposedly a filter that is an add on to the fan inlet. I have never seen one.

Moral of the story. Being polite and asking works.

Do you know if you got the so-called remanufactured Toyota battery?

P.S.- One more question, do you know orig date of purchase?
In other words, is the vehicle still legally within 10-yrs/150-k miles?
I think if you read the 2006 warranty guide it is quite unclear who gets the 10-yrs/150k miles extension. Believe it says California cars qualify, but we all have CARB certified Prii. So that is possibly why the "goodwill" unless the car is over 10-yr mark in that case the goodwill is bona fide.

We asked and we're told the battery was new. But I cannot tell from the invoice if it is new or remanufactured. We bought the car in Florida. But I'm not sure of the date. We are in TN now and we're told we are out of warranty.

We asked about the labor rate for the retail quote to be lowered to the warranty rate. But the dealer at this point was not willing to go any lower. Corporate was on our side, since this car was the second if 3 new Prius that we have purchased. But the dealer here in Clinton, TN has just done an oil change or two on our 2012 model. So, I guess he wanted to make more money and would not lower the labor charge.

sounds like you did pretty good! Some of the folks in CA (one or two reporting in here) are getting about your price but they are getting remanufactured Toyota battery, which is a new idea for us here. If you have the part # we can maybe see if it fits the remanufactured part #. See other recent thread on this. But so far CA is the only state we heard to get remanufactured.

Taking a closer look...maybe they did lower the labor rates.

    Labor 301.53
    Parts 1237.78
    Misc 5.00
    Tax 150.57
Total invoice 1694.88 is what we paid.

The split was 60% warranty and 40% customer.
Part number G9510-47031 Battery Assy. HV Unit price 1217.71 Split 60/40. Warranty. Minus core return. Warranty. Labor 61.20.
Part number G92DH-47020 Filter-HV Battery Unit price 20.70. Labor 240.33.

Boy, $240 labor for a filter? It must include the work to get at and clean the battery fan.

$240 for filter labor, I definitely would want to know what the heck that's about. That's 2 hours. And that's half price?

You are nursing a failed battery, it can leave you stranded if you don't fix it. It'll need to be replaced

My battery had a bad cell. After exhaustive searching and research, I was able to replace the cell myself at a whopping cost of $39.00 via Amazon, and some scraped hands. However, I still get the code (P0A80) and all the other bells and whistles that comes along. I clear the codes again and run the car up the road and at about 2 miles, BING! It's back. Checked all the cells yet again, and they are all reading within .1-.3 volts of each other. I can't abide the dealership raping us. (This is my mom's car). Any other ideas? Or should I just use it as a door stop or just use it as a boat anchor?
She bought this car from the dealership used, a 2006, right off the back of the truck, before the dealership checked the car out and did any repairs. I checked the car over and it had been wrecked and slap dash repaired before being brought to the dealership. I warned her to take it back the day she bought it, to no avail. At wits end pulling hair out over this mess. Nearly bald now. LOL!

you need to load test the cells.

Thanks, Bisco. I'll check them, then balance again. Hopefully that will work this time.

A 0.3 volt difference is enough to get a code. Bisco is correct that a load test will further identify weak modules, but you also need to balance your battery. The easiest way is to spend $400 for the Prolong Battery Maintainer that is for sale in the PC store.
