So i traded in my POS 2008 Jeep Liberty and decided to go the Toyota way based on family and friends saying its THE BEST maker and Consumer Reports seconding that. I've had it for just over a week and the rattling/buzzing noise from something being loose under the steering wheel is driving me nuts. In addition to the Pin from the fuel filler door wont extract and come back out so the fuel filler door is stuck slightly open. After calling the dealer who still has to install my remote starter and explaining the issue said that a rental cost 50 bucks a day. To which i argued that i'm not going to pay for a rental on a 1 week old car. Sorry for the rant but after my Jeep LITERALLY had 2 NEW engines installed and numerous other things replaced under warranty ( i didn't have the Jeep for 3 months, no joke) i'm just pissed that going to Toyota doesn't seem to have yielded me better luck. Besides these 2 small issues i love the car, just not the quality control i guess.

welcome! look up, is there a black cloud?:p

but seriously, rattles may be the biggest complaint. you can find tons of threads here. and now, yours is the second stuck gas cap pin in a 2016, i think the dealer lubed the other guys.

For now maybe, hopefully they can fix it quickly and get me back in my car.

    Welcome to PriusChat.

A thread here recently noted that a rattle under the steering wheel was caused by an air vent under the dash. You might see if yours is in the same area.

I have had nothing but Toyotas- a pickup back in the 80's, a Corolla wagon (90's), a 2005 Camry, 2010 Prius, and now the 2016 Prius. The 80's pickup rusted out, but the engine was still going strong with just oil/filter, battery and tire changes when at 190,0453 miles I sold it to buy the Corolla wagon which likewise was virtually repair-free for over 180K and 10 years of hauling artwork and misc stuff- heavy stuff. Then I got a Camry- terrible build- steering linkage worn prematurely, constant suspension issues, transmission problems and rattles. It has about 173K now and is running but unlike my other Toyotas, it is burning oil. My daughter drives it locally, but I'm watching it for major issues. My 2010 Prius is going strong, but from day one the well-documented/discussed issue of horrible rattling continues. The rattles don't seem to get worse, and I get a pleasing 49 real mpg, but you see the trend here- downward quality control.
I just purchased a 2016 prius because I love the real 60+ mpg and got a killer price. These opportunities convinced me to take another chance, mostly for the gas mileage, but also after exhaustive research and test driving of other brands.
I'm sorry for your troubles, and I don't seem to have any yet with mine at about 5300 miles, but I am not too surprised when I hear anyone having issues. When I had my pickup and Corolla, I had what seemed to be "bullet-proof" transport and got real value out of both of them. I am keeping my fingers crossed with my new Prius and my 2010 with 95K. Good luck, hopefully your troubles are resolved and if any others arise, they are fixable and minor.

it's not that toyota is trouble free, it's just in comparison to other manufacturers. it's no fun getting the lemon.

That damn fuel filler door is ridiculous. Why couldn't Toyota just put a simple, manual, spring-loaded door there?! We don't need a fancy electric switch and a little "nub" that gets stuck.

    Apparently so.

That's why all the young modifiers are "de-badging" their Prii's. :ROFLMAO:

That's what mine was doing, and that's what it was. A little foam tape in a couple spots cleared it right up.

I still have to locate the rattle from the hatch...it might be the license plate frame, or something under the floor of the hatch. It didn't start until I was nosing around under the hatch floor.

My '16 is nowhere near as rattly and creaky as a '15 I drove with similar mileage, so that's good. But it's not as good (i.e. rattle/buzz free) as the Honda I traded in though.

I have a rattle but it comes from the driver side door (somewhere inside the door panel).

All good ideas, i think mine is coming from up underneath the steering wheel so maybe the vent.

If you get under there, look for the vent...it's a white piece of plastic. Tapping on it made it clear that it was the culprit. I used some foam tape on that, and a little of the same foam tape between it and the smooth black plastic piece that covers the airbag, and between the smooth plastic piece and the textured black plastic piece next to it. Hopefully that'll make sense once you see and feel around under there.

I was always leery of purchasing a new model, new platform, right out of the box. However, watching these threads only show minor annoyances. Yes, they are irritating, but much better than faulty brakes accumulators, failing inverters, rumbling intake manifolds and the Gen II's Traction Control issues... Hang in there, and consider a different dealer if things are not handled to your satisfaction. A good Service Department goes a long way. I drive twice the distance to my dealer just because of that.

Next time you get a rattle apply the parking brake. Slightly. See if rattle goes. The two items I noticed that can rattle under there is the parking brake cable when disengage the nut and bolt is loose and not under tension. Also the center air vent under footwell area. Plastic against plastic noise . also check for wind noise from front quarter window. Place a rag over the base of quarter glass and wind noise is gone.

Attached is a Pic of under my driver side dash that a annoying rattle was coming from. The 2 white vents located under the driver side dash is what was causing alot of annoying rattles in my 3 touring. Putting 2 thick rolled felt between the black piece / vent resolved the rattles.
