Looking at certified pre-owned today - urgent pricing advice

    I'm looking at a 2013 Certified Pre-Owened Plug In Prius with 49,000 miles. The car has HOV stickers, which is why I'm looking at it. It is priced at $19,000 which at first seems very high but I'm guessing it is because of the HOV stickers? Anyone offer any advice on pricing, like is this wayyy high, just a little high, or?? I really need the HOV and I want to stay in a Prius (have an older one now). What would you offer or pay for this car max?

    It looks to be in great condition.

    if there are no others in that price range, then its a good buy. supply and demand in CA

    Make sure it was first sold in CA (for the 10 year 150k mile warranty, most likely is since it has HOV stickers but still a good idea to make sure). HOV stickers aren't bringing quite as much of a premium since there are plenty of them out there (I've seen some Volts with green stickers for around $15k preowned not certified) (and White HOV Stickers are still available new). Keep in mind the green stickers expire January 1st 2019.

    Other than that, search around to see if the pricing fits in line with others currently for sale in California.

    Maybe I don't understand the value of the HOV sticker but the price seems high to me. I bought my 2016 Prius Three for $25k with 0% financing. I would assume one could get a bare bones 2016 for $21k - $22k

    You can check some of the vehicle pricing web sites such as KBB.COM, EDMUNDS.COM or Black Book can give you estimates of prices in your local area. You can check by the car's VIN to determine some of its service and accident history with CarFax.

    I could definitely get a new Prius for not much more than this one but it wouldn't have HOV stickers. Put it this way, I would save at least an hour per day in commute times (30 min x 2 trips) for the next 2.5 years (expires after 2018).

    1 hours x 5 days per week x 130 weeks (2.5 years) = 650 hours sitting in traffic saved. That's literally 27 full days saved of sitting in my car. haha

    To me that's worth a couple thousand extra bucks.

    my 2012 plug in with 17000 miles from carmax $17000 in march. live in nashville. felt it was a good deal.

    So this is where my failure is.... couldn't you just get an HOV sticker for a new prius?

    Yeah, if I didn't need the HOV sticker I could get this much cheaper. I've seen 2014s with 20k miles as low as 18k.

    Sorry, guess I should have clarified. You cannot get HOV stickers on new Prii. The stickers for plug in hybrids "ran out" last year sometime so the only way to get in the car pool lane for single riders is to get an EV or an older plug in with the stickers already on it.


    So I went to the dealership at lunch. The car looked nice and I pulled up the carfax while I was waiting for the guy to do something. The car was in a small wreck in 2014. The salesman said it was a leased car and the car got rear ended at a low speed and they (the dealer) fixed it when the car was returned from lease. Despite the wreck they were only willing to budge on price by $500. I walked out without the car mainly because the wreck thing concerned me. I have no way of knowing if it was fixed properly or whatever. I'm sure it was since it's certified but I think I'd just rather wait to get one that hasn't been in a wreck.

    The 2012 plug in posted in the link above is nice but is an 8 hour drive from me and was sold a month ago. :D

    Given the imputed premium on HOV stickers, surprised they aren't available on aliexpress and ebay...
