Toyota, at least in the Mid Atlantic region is now offering a $1,500 rebate or 0% for 60 months.

I could be wrong but this tells me Prius sales are lagging.

Sales probably are lagging on the Prius. New car sales in general are lagging by over 6%.

Things either get better or worse, they hardly ever stay the same.

Don't worry, Toyota can weather the storm.

I don't see incentives as a means to increase sales over all, but just a tool to move likely buyers to a brand or model. Heck, most of the time buyers get pretty badly screwed by the dealers in spite of incentives. When I bought my Gen 4 I saw a couple go lock, stock and barrel for everything including the paint protection, pixie dust and undercoating.

Let's face it, I buy a new car every 10 years. Dealers sell every day. Who do you think has the advantage? The worst kind of deception is self deception. The dealer always makes bank. Always.

no question, low gas prices are killing efficient vehicle sales, and 2016 prius is not reigniting desire.

when you think about it, many people are saying, 'we want larger vehicles, with more power and luxury', and toyota is saying, 'we have added 4 mpg to our last offering'. not going to set the world on fire.

That 1.5 rebate or 0% was the deal we had in No. Calif in Jan Feb 2016.
You might be reading to much into this.
These deals occur many times during the year.

I've been looking at older prii, but the 1500 cash caught my attention. That kinda makes buying a new 2016 a little easier (vs. a gen 3 certifed)

I don't think you can go wrong with a new car vs. a pre-owned "certified" car. Before you buy any pre-owned car you should listen to this PODCAST by Steve Lehto. There's always the chance that with a used car you are getting someone else's issues. Buy it new. Keep it. Drive it carefully. Count 10 birthdays. Repeat.
