So I paid extra for the alarm from the dealer but have yet to get it installed. They didn't really give me any information on it, it was late and i just knew i wanted an alarm. Did anyone get it? does it come with any additional features such as remote start, or window control? or is it just an alarm? Of course once I get it installed i will update this thread.

If you can return it, do so because your car already has all the alarm features

except for the actual alarm right. looking back I definitely got "sold" on it and overpaid, but I do want an actual alarm, and i would prefer to have it integrated into the original key fob. I got an aftermarket alarm years ago, the alarm remote killed batteries way too often and the alarm had lots of issues. i think ive made my peace with overpaying, I got a pretty good deal on the extended warranty, im just hoping it turns out to have same additional features.

I don't know, im skeptical. I didn't put any money down, and i signed a contract. I'm not so sure they'd be so quick to refund me, and im not even sure how they would do it seeing as how it was fully financed.

You should just ask them, tell them you've changed your mind.

I am wondering what kind of car alarm you've got? In my region, all the dealers have a system (I believe) made by KARR. If you have that one, above the emergency break there's a piece of small black plastic with a small LED in it. That is simply "deactivated" if you don't want the alarm. I just said no, never asking how much.

What I described is part of a system that allows them (when it's in dealer mode) to walk up to any car (with a special fob in there pocket - not the Prius fob), and then they pound on the door frame twice... and the car opens. A convenience to the dealer on the lot to be able to show any car, without getting the Prius fob.

I was told that KARR system allowed for security alarm activation if a window is broken. Something I don't believe the built in security system has. Anybody, please correct me if I'm wrong.

A broken window will cost $150 to replace. Statistically, I don't think there's a high percentage of this happening to a car (unless you're in a very bad area).

The Karr Alarm from Toyota "might" detect window breakage....but who cares if it's detected? Those alarms never deter anybody if they are looking for something they want.

I had it happen in my own drive way right under my bedroom window (in a good neighborhood)! The driver side window on a Matrix. It was somewhere in the $250 range. The worse part... all the small safety glass pieces to clean up. Safety glass break into small squares that keep (to this day) showing up from time to time. They got into the air conditioner vents! If we take a turn fast, sometime we can still hear them.

Bottom line: don't leave anything in the car (visible for them to take). My son left a gym bag, but there was nothing in it. At least it got me to clean out the garage... so we can park the cars in there now.

Oh, and the after market alarm on the Matrix... never went off. The police said the pro's just use a special tool to strike the window, and the glass just makes a popping sound. Apparently not very loud.

Back to the OPT, I didn't opt for any dealer pushed alarm... but I would certainly be curious as what your dealer said this add-on alarm will do?

Or does anybody else have the KARR system?

[UPDATE: I was just cleaning out glove box and found the Invoice from Safelite Auto Glass - $302 inc. tax - driver side window]

investing car alarms is a waste of money, its just a matter of towing your car.

    Heed more info....

In this forum's "Prius Chat Shop" there is a link to a Glass Breakage OEM Alarm accessory.
Is that the alarm you are discussing?

If you like the alarm...install it. Nothing wrong with it. Your choice.

If installed, let us know how the install goes and what you think of the alarm functions.

You can't put a price on that! (y)

Let us how it works out... and see if you can get a brand name of the system from the dealer. I'm just very curious.

So I took it in yesterday, just got it back today. The tint got installed fine, and looks great, however my buddy in service said they shipped the wrong alarm so he had to reorder it. ill have to bring it back in. He did tell me that he looked into trying to get the remote start installed as well since i paid full price, but they told him that with this car you can't have both the alarm and the remote start, you have to choose one. His recommendation was that since the remote start works through the key fob (which doesn't have very good range) its not worth it anyways. The guy telling me all this is a very good friend so I'm not worried that he is just bs'ing me. I'll be sure to report back once its installed. I believe it was the "dealer works" alarm
