Can anyone provide some details on how the traffic and weather overlays work? If I have entered a destination and have navigation underway, will traffic information be displayed on the map somehow? How about weather? Thx, J

Traffic information will always be displayed (if you have it turned on in the Settings).

There's two types of traffic information - Traffic Flow and Traffic Incident

Traffic flow is the green, orange or red lines next to the route. They represent "free flowing", "slow" and "stop and go" traffic respectively.

Traffic incidents show up as icons on the map. They show construction, road closures, collisions and road conditions (e.g. flooding). You can press the icon to see the information. If you're stopped, you can view detailed information such as average speed and if you're on the highway, which sections are affected by that incident)

If you click "Apps" --> "Traffic" --> "Traffic Event List", you should be able to see a list of traffic incidents nearby (I don't know if it changes if you're under route guidance).

Thanks Tideland. Do you know how the weather overlay works? J

No because I haven't had much experience with it. I know you can check the weather for major cities (current, 3 day and next 6 or 12 hours) but those are in the "Weather" menu under Apps. I don't know about overlays on the navigation system itself.

I just asked because of the following description for the premium JBL system us3d the word overlay to describe both traffic and weather.

"HD predictive traffic and Doppler weather overlay"

I'm going to take a guess here... the Doppler overlay might be during extreme storm conditions. Because the data comes from your local radio station HD feed (just like the traffic)... your actual milage and usage may vary.

Ok, seriously it might be a regional thing on the weather. I do get the "predictive traffic" on my maps all the time. It appears very accurate. However, I haven't seen any Doppler weather overlays yet... nor a way to toggle that on. Could be dependent on that data being broadcast (or not) by local HD stations.

Weather app, then there's an option for weather map. It updates hourly using either the HD radio service or your phone (acts as a back up, unless you have that feature disabled). That's the only way I know to see a doppler radar overlayed on the nav screen.

Thanks to both of you. Hoping to take delivery on Thursday in New York and will be driving home from NYC to Baltimore in storms so I'll give it a shot and report back. J

Thank you! I just assumed it was something that would overlay on the Nav screen.

Found it... and who says it doesn't rain in Southern California!

Yeah because that would be logical and useful. It's probably a bandwidth issue that they don't want to put it on the NAV screen. Seeing that it only updates about once an hour, I'll be 80+ miles away by then, probably no point in always having it up on the NAV.
