You could have a look at some YouTube videos first which will give you an idea of what's involved. (It's been around for close to 20 years now (I think TOYOTA invented it).)

I changed the reverse beep to once only and set the smart turn signal to blink 4 times instead of the 3. Many more things you can change.

I think the first automatic parking system was in the 1930s but it never made it to production. The current system we use today is a French design (although every manufacturer has their own version) and was first on a Ligier in the 90s. I think Toyota was one of the first (maybe the first) to have it in what would typically be considered a mass market car, the Japanese market Prius in like 2003.

Here's the Japanese Gen 2 with IPA

In case you don't know Japanese, here's a European version with English commands

The next generation found on the LS460 in the U.S. removed the play-by-play commands but you still had to position the car properly for both back-in and parallel park.

The generation after that debut on the 2010 Prius and came with a "Pre-Support" function. This guides the driver with onscreen instructions to position the car prior to IPA taking over. It uses one sonar sensor on each side of the front bumper to accomplish this. This reduces the amount of adjustment needed on the screen, speeding up the IPA process. You could almost just click "Ok" every time without adjusting the box on the screen.

The latest one we have here is Simple IPA (or SIPA). This one, as Gen 4 owners know, takes the Pre-Support function to the next step as the car will position itself at the 45° angle for you as part of the IPA process when reversing into a spot. Parallel parking is also quicker as the system recognises the space better with the inclusion of even more parking sensors. It therefore doesn't require you to accept the position as it already knows how large the space is and can use the parking sensors to adjust itself. SIPA will also pull you out of a tight parallel parking spot.

I can understand that some elderly people may benefit from having the automatic parking feature. And some handicapped people.

But why are young guys and girls buying it? Is it just a toy? A gimmick? You never learned to parallel park? Or maybe you plan on keeping your Prius until you're 90? (Like me?)

Probably because its also included with something else that the customer wanted? Point being, we didnt care for a sunroof but she wanted the radar cruise control and HUD. In regards to PCP , she thought she wanted the park assist LOL .Never used it once...

Thanks F-dawg. Stupid me forgot it's part of the package!:LOL: Maybe I should have asked, are any young people using it??

I thought I wanted the "cross-traffic alert" thing. Sometimes I can't see what's coming when backing out of a parking space. But then my conscience spoke to me... "Hey dummy, I can save you 2000 bucks!
Just go park on the outskirts of the parking lot, where there's no other cars!" :ROFLMAO:;)

Mine came with the package lol. I wanted DRCC which, on the Gen 3, was only available on the top package. I've used it several times when I'm lazy or if I want to "impress the neighbours".

There's a line in Peggy Sue Got Married: "I happen to know I'll never need algerbra". Often comes to mind for me, well applied to Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. It's weird, abiding by the speed limits, seems I'm almost never following someone. o_O

Same here. We're from the same mold, I would have been happy with a 2 Eco.

Did another drunk test and took my hands off the steering wheel for an extended period of time and a warning display came up "put your hands back on the D@#$ steering wheel". First time I have seen that. She was angry.

BTW/wife gets pissed when I do that.

All sorts of little things I am noticing but can't write them down while driving.

Random MPG results the first 35 miles on a fill up. But always at the 100-400 mark exceeds 60MPG and sometimes exceeds 70MPG.

For all of us giving and receiving likes it takes 500 for a second free cup of coffee at SAMSCLUB.:ROFLMAO:

Next video is pull in or back in parking.

This moment in the space time continuum the forum is working a little better.

The only reason I got IPA on my Gen4 is for parallel parking.

I hope and believe a computer with sensors will understand if a spot is big enough and be able to pick places that are smaller than what I can assess by simply looking. Moreover, when parallel parking, the Prius is not the best to understand how much space you still have front and rear.

*And* in Germany in you *touch* another car while parking and there is even a hint of a scrub on the other car, you have to either wait on the spot for the owner to settle any damages he reckons you have made, or call the police for an assessment. Failing to do so, lands you quickly to a court. Yes, they are that efficient on these things. And neighbors are on the watch and report you. This is way Gen4 was bought with all possible sensors to avoid touching anything.

Moreover, the sales guy told me, and I hope he was not lying, that IPA can fit the car in spaces that are just 50cm longer than the total length of the car (i.e. 25cm front and back). If that is true, that opens a wealth of new spots to park into for me :D

In any case, all videos show huge parking spots, where IPA is really useless and most of all SLOW.
I need to park quickly, really quickly at times with car honking behind me, in narrow-ish roads in European cities, not reverse park in a football field parking lot. BTW, I never reverse park.

That said - I will believe it when I see it in action. Only then I will know if the 950€ are worth the thing, or it is nothing more than a gimmick (like the traffic sign recognition feature seems to be...).

I see nothing mentioned in the New Car Features - Park Assist - Simple Advanced Parking Guidance System section about distance. I guess you have to trust him lol.

One point the owner's manual does make is about high pressure water and the parking sensors. How would it work with automatic car washes? They use high pressure nozzles. Does that mean you have to hand wash the Prius? There are plenty of cars with parking sensors.

I never take a car I care about to anywhere except my drive way for a wash and wax. In an emergency I wash at a relatives house.

That way you water the grass. Good idea.

BTW/ I now have enough posts for 1.5 cups of coffee at Sam's Club.
